I ordered this book to help me select music for my cousin's funeral. I liked the fact that the book had musical notes as well as words, so a musician could play the pieces I liked, but honestly, they were all so dreary. I liked that there was a c.d. so we could play the music on a c.d. player. But I could not find one piece that was suitable. All were heavy Christian old fashioned pieces. I ended up selecting more contemporary music. i gave the book and c.d. to the funeral director at the funeral home. She was delighted.

Read on to the bottom of my comment for a list of the songs in this book.

I am a classical singer, and I sing at weddings, funerals, and other events as a way to make some extra money. I'm really glad to have a music book devoted solely to funerals, because it can be difficult to find repertoire to sing. There just aren't a lot of funeral songbooks on the market. And this one includes 40 pieces, which is great. (6 are instrumental). Most of the pieces are religious and classical/traditional. They are arranged for medium voice, ranging from about middle C to E5. Guitar tabs and chord boxes are included in most of the pieces. It's also really nice to have accompaniment CDs, because funeral homes don't always have a pianist available. The accompaniment tracks are easy to follow and don't change tempo all over the place. There are also demo tracks for every piece, so you can learn the songs even if you can't read music.

That being said, there are several things I don't love about this book. Of the 34 pieces for voice, only about 6 of them include a piano introduction (although the accompaniment CDs do include one on every track). This means you will have to rely on your pianist to make an intro up from the end of the piece. Most pianists will be able to handle this, but it's still not the most practical thing. Also, many of the arrangements are so simple they're boring. The accompaniment tracks again fix this somewhat with additional instruments alongside the piano, but I would imagine it would be boring with a live accompanist. Furthermore, the vocal line is included in the piano part; some people might like this (particularly if you're playing the piano with no singer), but I prefer not to have the piano doubling me when I sing.
