This is a thoroughly enjoyable book, largely due to the Irish gift of storytelling. Almost every person begins their narrative with a clear description of the circumstance - time of day, weather conditions, place, what the person was doing, how the person felt, and then goes on to the experience itself in the most eloquent manner imaginable. I can almost hear the brogue of each speaker, picture sitting with them by a blazing peat fire while they recount their incredible adventures. It almost seems too quaint to be taken seriously, but these are genuine, modern people describing an ancient phenomenon that incredibly happened to them. Definitely worthwhile, as is the follow-up book The Distant Shore. I hope the author continues to collect these stories, and not only from Ireland. I'm sure there are as many fascinating tales all over the UK.
