Going Out In Style

Biography

Now in their 14th year the Dropkick Murphys have risen from their basic Irish-punk roots to become a rocking & rolling, raging, green-clover machine. Dropkick Murphys are now one of the best-known rock bands in the world, thanks in part to their ability to tap into the working-class and sports fan culture that permeates Boston and the New England area but even more so due to their ... Editorial Reviews

Dropkick Murphys are not your typical punk band, they're Boston's biggest rock band, a band that plays Irish music with punk roots. A band with enormous families and armies of friends. They roll deep. DKM's music is so fierce and furious, their stage presence so explosive, and their commitment to their fans so ironclad, one can't help but be moved. They are the AC/DC of Celtic punk rock. This is their seventh studio album entitled "Going Out In Style."

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, Tuneful, and Indomitable March 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Upon reading about Going Out in Style, the latest release from Dropkick Murphys, I will admit to having a few concerns. It is a concept album revolving around the life of a character called Cornelius Larkin. I am suspicious of concept albums; many songs do not make sense apart from the "concept," and the albums often do not stand up to repeated listening. My second concern was the appearance of Bruce Springsteen on the traditional "Peg O' My Heart." While I am a major fan of the Boss, I wasn't sure how he'd do on a Dropkick Murphys album.

Both of my concerns turn out to be groundless. Going Out in Style is a concept album, but the songs are strong and can all stand on their own. This is a very tuneful disc. I find it more catchy and varied than their last effort, The Meanest of Times. The traditional tunes "Peg O' My Heart" and "The Irish Rover" are fun and rollicking. "1953" is a simply beautiful ballad. "Broken Hymns" is majestic, heartbreaking, and anthemic. As for Springsteen, he fits into the mix quite well.

Fans of the band will not be disappointed in this disc. Those unfamiliar with the band will not go wrong with it; however, as several reviewers have already stated, "The Warrior's Code" may be a better place to begin. Going Out in Style is fantastic Celtic-flavored punk, and it is to be recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love DKM! March 1, 2011
By Tim D.
Format:MP3 Music
Good solid effort. Plus Springsteen helping out on Peg O' My Heart doesn't hurt either. The most catchy tune on the record for me so far. Liking them all, and with each new listen they get more familiar and they feel like a well worn shoe. I've read it's a concept album on the life of a Fictional character named Cornelius Larkin. He has passed on and the album becomes a sort of retrospective of his "life". According to some interviews of frontmen Ken Casey and Al Barr he's a conglomoration of their family members, friends and loved ones. The music is as you would expect - Celtic punk, and the song writing is good too. They have the formula pretty well down to a science now. I agree with the previous reviewer that Warrior's Code and even Meanest of Times are superior, but if you've got those you'll enjoy this as well. Snag it for $5!! Going to see them this Saturday again, so it will be a blast to have some new tunes to dig at the show. If only Bruce would make a cameo... that would be a memorable event!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great combo album from a great band! April 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I'd already bought the mp3 album from Amazon, but had to pick this up when it came out. The studio album is great. The Dropkicks put a lot of energy into their studio recordings and it's always a pleasure to hear new stuff from them.

The live recording is even better in my opinion. It's a fantastic capture of their live performance and is doubly special for me, as I was at the Saturday concert at Fenway when it was recorded. Listening to the cd and watching the video download have been great ways to remember that fun night, with good friends and the exciting experience we had at Fenway Park.

While not perfect, it's definitely one of the better concert recordings I've purchased. If you're a fan of the Dropkicks, this is not to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dropkick Murphys do it again! March 26, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well, the Dropkick Murphys have done it again: another great album! I know I am different than a lot of people, but I was never worried about "Going Out In Style" being a concept album. I love music and to me the lyrics aren't as important as the actual music. Every song on this album is so good, it's hard for me to pick out a favorite. If I had to though, I would say "Hang 'em High" "Take 'em Down" and "Peg O' My Heart" are my favorites. Then again, how can I not list "Deeds Not Words?" The intro with the bagpipes and drums is just awesome!

If you like the Dropkick Murphys, celtic punk, or just celtic music in general, you'll like, if not love, this album. For $5.00 on MP3 download, how can you go wrong?

Get this album and enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars after seeing them live.... March 23, 2011
Format:Audio CD
after seeing them live in lowell, it's hard to fully appreciate their recorded work - the live show is such a joyous circus. what other punk band travels with a string quartet, five bag pipers, a penny whistle and a troupe of step dancers? but i would say that this album is another home run. yeah, springsteen being in the mix is cool, but these guys hardly need his help. it is sad that, according to their interview on WBUR the day before the show, that Liam Clancy thought the DKM had "ruined Irish music" for American audiences. true, traditional irish music does sound pretty tame after the furious full-tilt of the DKM, but i would highly recommend a listen to the Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, or The Pogues to see where these boys came from. and put Lowell on your calendar for next St. Paddy's Day. a show not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album April 8, 2011
By reggen
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
While it's true DKM has mellowed a bit ,it's still a great album. If you listen through the years, each album has lost the true punk feel a little more than the last. But honestly, I've mellowed with age as well. I couldn't pick a bad song out of 'em all. There are many catchy tunes and you can listen from start to finish. I agree with some of the other writers that, while I enjoyed The Irish Rover, it is a song that's been done very similarly before. Honestly, this is really worth every penny! But then again, I'd pay much more for one of my favorite bands.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little more tough and Irish
Sounds like the Murphy's got a little more tough with the vocals. I enjoyed it. A good balance of the old DKM with pipes and all the other ethnic insturments.
