Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

At the beginning of this no-budget cheapie, Adam Sandler tells us this is a "loosely thrown together story" built around free access to a cruise ship and "a lot of good-looking women." So they get an A for truth in advertising. Sandler (very green in his first feature film) plays Shecky Moskowitz, a cruise ship waiter with dreams of being a standup comedian. At one point, General Manuel Noriega sends some goons to take over the ship. And there's a lot of voluptuous women hanging around in bikinis. So much for the plot. Sold as a wacky sex comedy, Going Overboard is more of a funny-nose-and-glasses movie, desperately trying anything for a laugh. Sandler's trademark being-funny-by-being-unfunny hadn't started to click yet. Only Billy Zane (as a sort of long-suffering-Jewish-grandmother-ish King Neptune) and Adam Rifkin (as a self-absorbed, mossy-toothed heavy metal star) seem to have any comic timing. A number of the supporting cast would go on to play roles in other, better Adam Sandler movies. Look fast for Billy Bob Thornton(!), appearing here as "Dave the heckler." --Geof Miller

Product Description

In The World Of Comedy It's Either Sink Or Swim.Schecky Moskowitz (Adam Sandler) is the zany cocktail waiter on this pleasure cruise with stunningly gorgeous beauty queens. Since the ship's comedian Dickie Diamond gets all the girls by being the funny man Shecky dreams of taking over as the ship's comic. Unfortunately Dickie doesn't want the competition and refuses to give Schecky a chance at performing as his warm up. As fate would have it the comedian gets locked in the bathroom. In need of a comic act Schecky is given his big break at stand-up. Suddenly all the beauty queens become interested in the funny Schecky. But the big question is will he sink or swim? Schecky's antics rock the boat in this hilarious sea adventure which contains hysterical comic sketches and sexy fantasy.System Requirements:Running Time: 97 MinutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: R UPC: 031398710493 Manufacturer No: 20313

1.0 out of 5 stars Zero stars for this farce, May 19, 2004

This review is from: Going Overboard (DVD)
Adam Sandler has made some relatively funny movies in his time. This one is most assuredly not one of them. I realize that this film was one of his earliest projects - long before he hit his stride & could dictate what films he wished to contribute to. In the case of this movie, that point is exceedingly obvious.

It seems like this DVD tries to be funny by being unfunny. That's kind of like trying to satisfy your appetite by starving yourself. Nothing in this film is funny - period. It almost appears that it is deliberately that way (kind of ironic for a comedy, wouldn't you say?).

The only redeeming quality of this movie is that it does have some fairly attractive women wearing bikinis. If it were not for that, I would give this one negative one stars instead of zero stars.

There are some other Sandler movies that are of fairly high quality. Do not make the mistake of believing this is one of them. In fact, if you happen to see this DVD in your shopping cart, be sure & throw it overboard!

1.0 out of 5 stars what is this???, July 8, 2005
This review is from: Going Overboard (DVD)
what a waste of time and money. why did i buy this? i don't know, maybe because adam was in it. what i found out was that they must have grabbed him before he even decided to become a star. this looks just like something you would see as a college project with a subject as what not to do to make a successful movie.

adam sandler fans stay away. this will ruin your taste of one of the greatest comics out there.
