The PBS
Going Places series transports viewers to the world's most popular vacation spots. In this edition we are treated to a marvelously tropical paradise in the midst of Indonesia: Bali. Hosted by James Avery (of
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air fame), this program gives a full tour of the 56-mile-long island and offers a rich view of all it has to offer. Discovered by tourists in the 1930s, Bali maintains an Old World charm that caters to modern visitors. Visitors can encounter ancient temples with exquisite stone carvings or see the legendary rice paddy terraces, then head down to the beaches for surfing or paragliding.
We follow our host as he goes scuba diving to the wreck of the U.S.S. Liberty and hikes up Batur Mountain, an active volcano 4,000 feet above sea level. Special attention is also given to the thriving artist community in the outlying areas of the island and to the traditions of the Balinese people, including the graceful legong dancers and rhythmic gamelan music. Going Places: Bali definitely inspires thoughts of travel for its viewers, and, for about an hour, whisks them away to an Indonesian wonderland. --Zachary Lively
