Joe Morello is Fantastic,
By Gertrude da Goat (New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Going Places (Audio CD)
This album is one more piece of evidence that Joe Morello is one of the all-time greats of jazz drumming. The music (and Morello's drumming) is tasteful, dynamic and swinging throughout, Morello shows his marverlous technique, his good taste and his sense of humor as well. My only regreat is that Joe didn't start recording albums such as this one as soon as he left the Brubeck Quartet in the late 60's.

One of best recordings ever!!!,

Joe Morello is hands down one of the most musical drummers. The songs on this cd never suffer from heavy handedness (or footedness for that matter). He very well has aquired some of the best chops and technique on the planet but always plays for the song and gets out of the way of the other musicians when they take a solo or a few bars. This is a recording for anyone who enjoys jazz, whether a fellow drummer or not. Beautiful tasty musicianship and a beautifully recorded album.

IF all the great drummers that ever lived were assembled in an auditorium, and Joe Morello walked in...they would all stand!
"Going Places" is simply one example of why he's the best in the business. And, as expected, surrounded by the greatest musicians in this world..or any world! "Going Places" will take you through a universe of great Jazz and where Joe Morello rules supreme.

I am so glad I bought this CD when I did. Joe Morello is the drummer's drummer. I'm a drummer so I should know. Joe was the greatest rhythm drummer ever. You'll get a taste of that when you listen to Sweet Georgia Brown.
Then we go to Topsy and Mission Impossible Theme ... WOW! This CD goes into my carry case every time the wife and I hit the road. Fantastic! I can honestly say, I don't even miss Dave Brubeck when I listen to this recording. Joe got a group on here that just don't quit. I wish they had been able to make 50 more recordings. I would have bought them all.

This is a classic CD. I am so Glad that I bought this when I did. This CD is fantastic. I enjoy playing jazz drums myself so Topsy and Mission Impossible Theme are two of my favorites.
This is one CD that always goes in my travel sack when the wife and I go on a trip. Joe Morrello is my favorite drummer. I like him better than Buddy Rich, Gene Kruper, or any of the other classics. He's tops. The most rythmic drummer in the business. You'll see that when you listen to Sweet Georgia Brown. The guys backing him up on this CD are no slouches either. I can honestly say that when I listen to this CD I don't miss that fact that there is no Dave Brubeck on it. Joe does it on this one. I wish that he had made 50 more with this group. I would have bought them all.

Joe took a long five, but with this cd, he's ever so back!,

The first few bars of Sweet Georgia Brown quickly recall the scatty rhythmic signature of Joe's contributions to the classic Time Out" Brubeck collaboration. Again and again -through the first six cuts - we savor the accommodating sweetness to throaty surliness of the superior sax/flute front,a signature bass that refuses to stay too far back too often, a now percussive, now pouty piano, the interactive chattiness and bright energy that makes the driving skins leap for our inner ear when they're not otherwise engaged in coaxing purple sensuality. The wider view: generally consistant and often fresh interpretations throughout a solid half dozen cuts passing for a few mundane respites just beyond the midpoint, until surging through the final stretches with autumn leaves/sweet and lovely -- Overall, a pleasure!

Joe Morello is one of a kind.,

There are two classes of drummers - Joe Morello is one and the second includes all the other guys. His total command of his drum kit enables him to improvise cleverly and appropriately with no apparent effort, and he seems to create new licks for each piece he participates in. LIke most geniuses, he leaves his listeners thinking "why didn't I come up with that?" He's been doing this for about 50 years and seems not to be losing his touch.
