Travel videos take all kinds of approaches: some focus on the budget trip; others are for the rugged traveler; and some like to get deep into a city and rub elbows with the locals. The Going Places series, hosted by James Avery, doesn't do any of these. This is a vacation video in the ultimate sense, a virtual tourist trip from your living room, and it's all the more fun for it. Brief on the history but heavy on the lush scenery, Going Places: Turkey will have you longing for the intricate designs of Istanbul mosques, the luxury of palace hotels, the cool kayaking on the turquoise coast, and the laziness of a boat charter on the sea. We follow the journey of Eric, an American returning to Turkey, as he visits the family of friends and trolls the streets of Istanbul. Couple Billy and Michelle hit the coast for some rest and relaxation. They visit tourist sites (including the rug market and a trip to see belly dancers), and while we get only a slight glimpse of the history of the land, we get a tremendous desire to visit this fascinating country that spans part of two continents. --Jenny Brown

I've been to Turkey and am heading back - this time though, I'll be leading a group. To help the group prepare, I've been putting together a list of recommended reading and viewing materials. This video is the best I've seen! It goes into enough detail and gives great visuals. It gives practical information while avoiding a dry academic approach. This is also a great video to help disarm unreasonable fears about heading some place so different from America. This tape will make you want to go to Turkey and will be a great reminder of the wonderful places you visited when you get back.

I bought this video because I am planning to visit Turkey in the near future. It gives a delightful overview of the country and encouraged my curiosity. A good video to preview your trip or to see whether you might be interested in exploring Turkey further. Lots of historical architecture, both human produced and natural. Fascinating history. Lots of artistic craftwork to buy.
