Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In a starred review, PW said this farmyard tale "combines powerful images with the fun of a bedtime game that can be adapted to many sleepy imaginations." Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- A well-planned and well-developed book, both deceptively simple and complex. It opens with a father and young son gathering up a box of toy farm animals. The two figures are rendered in isolation against a stark white background. The boy asks his father how each of the various animals go to sleep. The father replies with a short rhyme that appears under an illustration showing first the individual creature and then a more inclusive farm scene with highly detailed backgrounds. The contrast of the bare white background with the realistic presentation of the barnyard creates a push-pull idea, a visual echo of the call/response motif set up in the text. Wijngaard's sparkling watercolors are a tour de force; he moves confidently from image to image, from the changing movements and expressions of the father and sleepy child, to authoritative paintings of the animals, all within the changing light and shadow of a waning day. Extending the story from cover painting to endpapers, these scenes make for a soothing and intriguing bedtime book. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library

4.0 out of 5 stars My 1 1/2 year old loves it, September 10, 1997
By A Customer
To my 1 1/2 year old son, this is the "daddy" book. This might be due to my resemblance to the daddy in the book or our nightly ritual of reading the "daddy" book. But whatever the reason, one "daddy" looks forward to this nightly event.

As we turn the page to the animal going to sleep, he boldly proclaims the animal's call. As we turn the page back to the daddy and his son, he resoundingly pronouces "daddy" then reviews the sounds for the animals on the adjacent page.

Some day he will be too old for this book and that will make one "daddy" very sad

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect bedtime story., October 24, 1998
By A Customer
A sleepy little boy puts his farm animals away, asking how each one goes to sleep. His patient father explains how each animal goes to sleep. Then, father asks his son how HE goes to sleep... and puts him to bed. My 3 year old loves this book, and shows me how HE goes to sleep. Perfect ending for tucking in for the night!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must have book, March 25, 2002
By A Customer
This book is so gently written -- perfect for bedtime reading. The illustrations are so detailed you find something new everytime you read it. My toddler son has to have this book read to him every night before he goes to sleep. I beg the publisher to reprint this book so others may enjoy it as well. Perfect for fathers and sons!
