WOW! Man at Work,
By
This review is from: Going Somewhere (Audio CD)
Forget about anything that you remember about Men at Work. This is stipped-down, heartfelt music for the 40+ crowd. Colin's lyrics are hip, refreshing, and mature while staying playful. Middle-age has brought Colin to a place where he has no regrets about his past and is looking forward to the future. I never like a CD after one play. I'll never say never again. Give it a spin - listen to a man comfortably at work.

Gorgeous acoustic album!,

With the 2005 re-release of the wonderful disc "Going Somewhere" it is evident that Colin Hay has come full-circle from quirky 80's/MTV phemon to a formidable songwriter of appreciable wit and charm, who can make other artists half his age look like they are standing still. And with thanks to some recent exposure on movie and TV soundtracks, Mr. Hay pulled together his most consistent solo album to date. Standout tracks include the immediately appealing "Beautiful World", the intensely moving "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin", and "Looking for Jack", a very catchy offering which, as Mr. Hay hilariously tells in concert, is about a run-in he had with one Mr. Nicholson. Add to this, "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" (featured in the movie Garden State, but not on the original release of this album), sweet 12-string work on "Circles Erratica", and some nice slide guitar on "Water Song" and you can start to see why this is such a fantastic little disc. Additionally, given that the album is somewhat of a patchwork quilt of previous efforts (several cuts do appear on earlier albums), in some ways it stands as a fitting document of a decade of high quality and underappreciated musicianship. And as Mr. Hay gets ready to stamp his trademark vocals and tight songwriting on an upcoming solo album of all new material, "Going Somewhere" may be the best disc you can get to hear what you've been missing out on all this time.

My apologies to Mr. Hay....,

I was a bit skeptical of Colin Hay just because I remember him as the goofy guy on MTV talking about vegemite sandwiches...but I heard the song of his on the Garden State soundtrack and that stuck with me. After purchasing this CD my only question is what are you waiting for? If you like Damien Rice, you'll love Colin Hay. He's a bit more brighter than Mr. Rice but equally soulfull. Colin's voice is a marvel to listen to. This kinds reminds me of when I re-discovered Aimee Mann after thinking she was just the chick with the crazy hair in the Till Tuesday video. Boy was I wrong there and equally so here. Great voice, great songwriter, great music. I can't wait to hear what's next.

Colin's Bringing It Back Even Better Than Before,

This ol' Man at Work has kept his voice in great shape. Each song showcases his stellar voice supported by beautiful acoustic guitar accompaniment. The compositions are typical of singer-songwriter works and many of them could be played on the radio if radio played anything good these days.

I had a feeling this would be a great album after sampling one of Colin's originals on the "Garden State" soundtrack called "I just don't think I'll ever get over you". This song is amazing and has all the soul and emotion of anything you'll ever hear.......excuse me, never hear on a radio station. Sample these: "Beautiful World", "Looking for Jack", and "Lifeline".
Colin's guitar playing goes perfectly with his voice and nothing else is needed. No over-played drums, bass, or synthesizers would make this CD any better. In fact, after listening, you forget that most of CD is just Colin and his guitar.

I bought this CD after I saw Colin Hay in concert last summer. I looked forward to hearing old school Men At Work songs but when I heard his new solo music, I was even more enchanted by him. His songs are melancholy yet full of feeling and extremely addictive! My favorites are "Maggie" and "I just don't think I'll ever get over you".

I bought this because I loved 'I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You' from the Garden State soundtrack. I liked it from the first listen, which is unusual for me. Now, each time I listen to it I love it more and more. The songs are simple and powerful at the same time. His vocals wrap around me like a warm blanket. If you're not sure you should buy this...try it...you'll like it.

I agree with everyone else who has reviewed this album to date (all five stars!). Colin Hay is a brilliant and unique talent. In addition to his sense of melody and lyrical composition, he also possesses one of the most beautiful and powerful (and enduring) voices of our time. Additionally, in concert, he is downright hilarious! -- Not to be missed in live performance. If you like this album, I also recommend "Peaks and Valleys." -- They are 2 of the most perfect musical albums I know. But, really, all of his solo albums have something to offer. I am so glad Zach Braff is helping to get his solo work out there.

He's in it for the long haul.,

Colin Hay is simply a great singer-songwriter. His distinctive voice remains as strong as it ever was in the Men At Work days. He's one of those artists that can write a song that resonates on a deep, personal level and makes you want to play it over and over and over. This album is a great choice. I had the pleasure of seeing him live in Boston recently - try to catch one of his rare appearances. You will enjoy it.
