Valuable Instruction,
By Ewan Tempero (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Goju Ryu Karate Technical Series 2 - Sanchin (Tsunami) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Summary: I can't imagine how to get better instruction without having the instructor in the room. This video features Morio Higaonna Sensei (Chief Instructor, International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Federation) explaining various aspects of the Sanchin Kata. The introduction discusses its orgins in China, while showing photographs and old footage of other people doing variations of the kata. It then shows Higaonna Sensei doing the kata, first from the front, and then again showing side views. Probably the most valuable part of the video is on Shime (testing). This is shown three different times (different angles, testing from the front and the back, different levels of power). Finally, Higaonna Sensei gives a lecture (translated by the narrator) on the principles of the kata, the philosophy behind its training, and details on effective testing. The lecture includes demonstration of what he is saying on his assistant. This video is full of information. The repetition is not just to fill time, but provides useful different views of what is being shown. I believe it is extremely valuable to any student or instructor of Shanshin. |
