5.0 out of 5 stars Gokudo - an Extraordinaire anime!

3.0 out of 5 stars Yes its good, but not that good...
I have watched many animes and GOKUDO is just something I would say rather plainly so far, is nothing exceptional. At certain times, it can be dry but it can be funny too. But for 26 episodes altogether, the story doesn't have a story and becomes a mix mash of silly tales of Gods & Demons.

It can be fun to watch when there is nothing to watch at all... but its more of...

An ill-tempered, lecherous, money-grubbing adventurer whose only thoughts are for his own safety and pleasure, he manages to accidentally save at least four people every episode, usually stealing from them in the process. His goals are never honest, and his methods are despicable, but he's got spunk. Each episode is laugh-out-loud hilarious, the fight scenes are most excellent, and the enemies are superb. A must-see for the Slayers fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars The fantasy genre... twisted every which way!, August 15, 2005
Gokudo: Collection Extraordinare collects all the six individually released disks for the series and put them in one over-sized pack. Spanning 26 episodes this is both one really looong breath of fresh air compared to your typical fantasy anime.

First of, let me say one thing. I simply can't help but ADORE Gokudo, the exraordinary main character! Seeing him mess things up in his unending quest for fame and riches (in the most arrogant way possible) is encredibly entertaining. In short I'm a little biased in this review, but who wouldn't be after loving a series.

The show features about five main story arcs that really go all over the place. One has Gokudo felling the Magic King from power, another has him come in conflict with the Buddah, God and Magic World races in one huge confrontation and yet another has him face off against Buddaha and Magic World people with the fate of the entire world resting on his actions! A little over the top, I know, but the slap-stick, often intellectual (a better word would be contextual...), keeps things running light. Gokudo and his companions are always fighting and arguing. Fighting and arguing. Not at all what you'd always expect from a group who's destined to save the world... somehow.

Basically, you have more comedy than you can shake a stick at and, even though it won't appeal to everybody, it will definetally have an impression. The voice actors (in both Japanese and Enlgish) to a good job making everything... absurd. As for plot, it may get a little overwhelming and overcomplicated with so much going on so quickly throughout the show that is may loose other peole who just want to relax their brains and go on auto.

Recommended! Tired of white-knights saving the world with charm and good looks? Get Gokudo: Collection Extraordinare! Its not perfect but at least it is (you guessed it) Extraordinare.

5.0 out of 5 stars If this guy played fair, he wouldn't survive the series, June 30, 2003

Absolutely hilarious!!! Gokudo only has two wishes, "I want all the money and all the hot babes of the world all to myself!" He gets turned into a woman, an old man, a woman again, a baby, and back again. This greedy, backstabbing, pervert beats the bad guys for one reason, HE'S WORSE. The fact that he is an unbeatable swordsman helps. One of the many running gags in the series is that Gokudo breaks the foulest wind in human existance. It not only clears taverns, but counters magic spells and rouses tempermental goddesses. His dealings with the oni Ikyuo are equally hilarious. I originally bought this series on VHS and this is the excuse I have been looking for to get it on DVD!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gokudo - Collection Extraordinaire, April 28, 2005

This was a very interesting series. I normaly go for animes like Fushigi Yugi's Mysterious Play (best anime ever), Blue Seed, and others of their nature. But this was suprisingly refreashing. Gokudo isn't a goody goody or even turn out in the end to have any amazing personality changes. He remains basically the same the whole series, which is to say a lying cheating, inexplicale rotten fellow with a dry since of humor. but that is what makes this series so great. Along with a crew of wierd "friends" they embark on jouney after countless journey and the only ways to get Gokudo to do anything good is to either have a great treasure or hot babes, or something wrong with him that can only be cured with completting a quest. I recomend this to anyone looking for a good laugh and a side step to your basically averge animes that always have basicaly the same main character.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gokudo Action Comedy, December 6, 2001
By A Customer
Gokudo is a laugh out loud kind of fun! He's totally unlike any "hero" you have ever met. He's rude, lecherous, devious, and doesn't trust anyone completely. He's looking for the angle he doesn't beleive in the goody goody stuff. He's selfish, greedy and many things. He does have a spark of good deep down inside, he does have some decentcy, not much. He fits more the bad guy kind of profile, than any hero form. This movie does have some very childish humor in it, like he picks his nose!! gross, and he has stink bomb farts, yuck!. Look beyond that and it's a cool movie, and hopefully there will be more, it does leave you hanging though, so that's no fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money, Babes, and Fame, July 5, 2005
This anime had me laughing from start to finish (and that includes the ending theme too)! Judging by the cover, one would assume this to be a typical sci-fi/fantasy adventure series with lots of detailed sword fights and dragons and such. But they just omit the action and cut strait back to the comic story of Gokudo, a half-prince anti-hero who's willing to do anything to line his own pocket with money, get babes, and become famous. Heck, he'd even sell someone's soul to the devil if it meant that he would come out of the situation on top!
If you're looking for something with loads of gut-wrenching humor, hilarious animation style, and very interesting plot with an anti-hero as your main character, then you're gonna love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good show, if you don't mind a protagonist with no morals, April 3, 2003

(REAL NAME)
Lina Inverse may have had her greedy, ill-tempered, mercenary-like ways, but she was undeniably a good person underneth all that. Not so with Gokudo. A scheming, thieving swordsman who steals from ANYONE and gives to himself, he seems to have been born without a concience, and whenever he battles evil, it's only because they happen to be threatening him personally. In episode one, his landlord asks for his help when the man's daughter Asaka is kidnapped. Gokudo first demands payment of 50 gold coins in exchange for his services, then walks off with the money with no intention to do anything!

Anyway, the first three episodes on this tape/disk are with Gokudo meeting a genie who can change his own gender-both in body and in mind-and who picks and chooses which wishes to grant, and who has a weakness for alcohol, obtains a magic sword that returns to him whenever he calls for it, (guess what Gokudo plans to use the sword for,) stumbles upon a plot by the evil ruler of the kingdom Lolette to sacrifice several virgen women, including the king's own daughter Rubette, and discovers the secret of his birth. The next two episodes are the beginning of a whole new story, as Gokudo, having defeated the evil king, goes off on another adventure with the genie and Princess Rubette in tow.

The show is filled with laughs, and the English dub is great. Two of my favorite voice actors are in it-Stacy Renna (Leona from DOMINION TANK POLICE) is the female genie, Debbie Rabbai/Angoria Deb (Female Maze from MAZE THE MEGA-BURST SPACE) is the adventure-seeking princess Rubette Lolette. Check this one out-unless, of course, you need your heros to have a spark of decency in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gokudo - Interestingly strange and enjoyable, May 21, 2002
A Kid's Review
By the Way I am older than 13. But I could only review if I said I was younger.
Before I bought it my friend said it wasnt very good. Well I can asure you I barely ever listen to her so I bought it anyway...and pretty much for only 2 reasons.
1. Gokudo(the main character) smiles evily...I am a HUGE fan of evil grins and that REALLY REALLY appealed to me.
2. Prince Niari is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!!!!! He is sooooo entirely your tall dark and evil type of guy...which appeals to me. (get the idea that I like evil? Well your right, I do)

Now the story line is quite original. I mean I've never seen anything like it. It's very unaxpected and different than other ones. I really like how it's going (I have the 1st movie and the 2nd DVD.)
Well my annoying family is yowling at me because they are unfeeling little paranahs. So I have to say Ciao!
Niari forever!!!!!!!!!!

This collection is a lot cheaper than buying all those other DVDs, even if you haven't seen the series, buy this whole collection, 'cause you may end up liking it and wanting every episode! A few jokes were so-so, but most were really funny! I really reccomend this

This review is from: Gokudo - Magician Extraordinaire (DVD)
If you're anything like me, you bought the first dvd, thought it started really sloppy, but laughed your [...] off anyways and wanted to see more but didn't know if it would be worth it. It is. This dvd picks up and continues the momentum begun in the first. The new characters are great and now I'm officially hooked. I can't wait to see part three of this twisted fantasy anime creation. Djinn is arguably the star of this disk and his lectures (and Gokudo's reaction to them) are hilarious. He even becomes a girl again (voiced by the brilliant Jessica Calvello) and changes their horse into a man who continues to act much like a horse. There's plenty more Ikyu action, a giant turtle princess in need of some good lovin', a drunken outdoor banquet of insanity that must be seen to be believed (I don't want to ruin it), Gokudo is turned into a grumpy old man and back again, and the mighty (and bratty) Sun Goddess appears and changes Gokudo's name (she can do that, she's a goddess) to Stinky. Too much fun for words to explain, really.
