I absolutely loved this 2 cd set. I especially like the 2nd disc, altho I have played both in the car almost incessantly. Its amazing how tolerable Los Angeles traffic becomes when you are listening to BB's mellow sounds.

i ahve always dug me some B.B. King. he made Lucille his guitar a Household name and his vocals which to me are underrated are soulful as well. dug his blend and stylings and the simple but effective way he makes Music. this Compilation is right on time. I was playing B.B. King over the weekend and playing some cards. he brings that downhome folk vibe through his work always.

It's just amazing, play "Ghetto Woman" on disc two. It sounds just like John Lennon's "I'm Losing You". Probably because the track features both Ringo and Klaus! At lease now I can dig-it!good guy gary

ABOUT 22 CLUNKERS AND ABOUT 12 HITS - GOLD IS A MISLEADING TITLE!,

This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
I thought that I had pretty much exhausted my search of B. B. King's cd catalog when his Gold cd popped up among my recommended cds one day. I later researched Gold and found out that B. B. King's Gold is buried on the fourth page of his cd catalog and that it is filled with 34 BLUES songs. Is Gold indeed B. B. King's remastered "greatest hits" package that I have been seeking for some time? The Gold title suggests that these are all of B. B. King's "best recordings" or "greatest hits." After looking at the song titles, I'm not very confident that these 34 songs are in fact B. B. King's "best recordings" or his "greatest hits." There are a large number of BLUES songs found on Gold that I have not ever heard of before. These unknown song titles are especially prevalent on the second cd. In addition, some of my favorite B. B. King live songs are not found on Gold. (I already own six other B. B. King cds, but he has recorded a much larger number of albums and cds. Thus it is possible that even though I already had a good knowledge of much of B. B. King's music, I was still not familiar with some of his better or best music.) So what will I discover when I first listen to Gold? When I received and listened to Gold, my worst doubts about the consistent high quality of all, or most, or even a majority of the 34 songs on this two cd set were soon confirmed! Gold is a misleading title for this cd set! On Gold we find about 12 great BLUES songs mixed in with about 22 other B. B. King clunker songs that never were, and did not ever deserve to be called, "hits." One of these about 22 clunker songs is a 10 minute B. B. King narration about how much he loves his guitar, Lucille, mixed in with some guitar chords. This is only one of the about 24 disappointments that you will suffer through if you buy and listen to Gold. I obviously enjoy B. B. King and his band; I own six other B. B. King cds, and I once saw him perform live in concert. What a thrill! However, my listening goal is not to simply hear B. B. King and his band perform on cd, I want to hear B. B. King and his band perform good to great songs on cd, songs that I both appreciate and enjoy. I don't want to waste alot of my time by listening to about 22 clunker songs that simply do not in any way move me, in order to hear about 12 great songs that I truly enjoy. Neither do I want to hit the skip button about 22 times, in order to hear about 12 songs that I appreciate. This is the second cd set in the Gold series that I have bought; the other one that I bought was John Lee Hooker Gold. I plan to dispose of both cd sets. Both B. B. King Gold and John Lee Hooker Gold included a limited number of great songs and an equal or larger number of clunker songs, mixed together on a two cd set that included a large number of total songs. This format must be some kind of formula or marketing plan created by the maker of the Gold cd series. Well, I, for one, reject this marketing plan; never again will I purchase a cd set in the Gold series! My strong recommendation is that you NOT BUY B. B. King's Gold cd set, unless you have low listening standards, and simply enjoy whatever song comes next. Perhaps B. B. King and his band did not actually create enough great songs to fill a two cd set. All I know is that I'm currently listening to, and much enjoying, B. B. King's Live in Japan. THE GREAT BLUES MUSIC GOES ON...John |
