One of Barbara's best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
Despite the title, "Gold" isn't a collection of Barbara Dickson's greatest hits, though it does feature the biggest hit of her career. "I Know Him So Well," recorded with Elaine Paige and pulled from the "Chess" concept album, is included in its original version. It's a beauty, as the two women sing about the man they both know yet know so little about. When Dickson sings counterpoint to Paige's vocal, it's a heartbreaker. That song is the highlight of "Gold," but the rest of the album is filled with great music. Dickson's absolutely shimmering voice gets first-class treatment here, with wonderful material and smart pop backdrops crafted by producer Pip Williams. She has marvelous taste in cover songs, including John Waite's "Missing You," ABBA's "Soldiers," Burt Bacharach's "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and a breathtaking version of Sam Cooke's "You Send Me." Even the original tunes are good -- notice Michael Marra's poignant "Taking the Next Train Home" and Dickson's own two compositions, "Another Good Day for Goodbye" and "Rivals." No wonder this was one of her biggest albums in the U.K., because it's absolutely terrific.
