5 Stars is not enough for this one. 4 live tracks and 34 incredible tracks for the price of a regular CD. What's not to like? Digitally remastered in its full glory, Gold is...well..pretty much all of the revered hits(e.g. No Woman No Cry) as well as some lesser known, yet just as archetypal efforts such as Crazy Baldhead. The more intense Marley fans might scoff at this 2 CD set as too commercially appealing.
I, on the other hand, think this is perfect for any Marley enthusiast who doesn't feel like buying 20 separate CD's but wants to experience Marley from his austere beginning to his untimely death. The ingenious layout of Gold delineates its tracks like Stir It Up from his first independent album all the way to Buffalo Soldier and Iron Lion Zion that were, of course, released posthumously. Solid.

Expanded version of "Legend"?,
By AndyN (Sarasota, FL USA) - See all my reviews

Quick note: this 34 track, 2-disk set contains 13 of 14 tracks on the 1984 release of "Legend" - "Three Little Birds" is not included, which is a curious song to leave off. Anyway, I think it's a great expansion. Also, in response to an earlier review, I did a side-by-side listen of a couple of tracks with the 1984 Legend CD and the bass is every bit as strong ...

Like Legend, but better,

These cd's are a must for every music collection. This set spans the legendary career of Bob Marley and his Band the Wailers. This set cover songs from every album, and if you don't want to buy all the albums this set is good because it gives you a good taste of what each album is going to sound like. I can't reccommend any one Album by Bob Marley and the Wailers to start out with over another, but if you get this set it will lead you into the right direction. Each album has it's own groove and once you have listened to this set you will see that, and if you want more you will know exactly what album to start with. I can't believe it took island records this long to come up with the idea of a career spanning 2 cd set to introduce people to the legendary Bob Marley and the Wailers. If you have any sort of music collection, this 2 cd set belongs in it for sure.

The Ultimate Bob Marley Collection.,

Bob Marley was a true musical genius in every sense of the term. He completely defined the reggae genre and influenced a great deal of artists, and his legacy still lives on today.
"Gold", a 2 cd compilation of all Bob's most familliar tunes as well as many lesser acknowledged recordings, is the ideal collection for the beginning Marley fan. At 34 tracks, including timeless classics such as "Stir It Up", "I Shot The Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Jamming", "One Love / People Get Ready", "Waiting In Vain", "Is This Love", "Could You Be Loved", "Redemption Song" and "Buffalo Soldier", your money is definitely being well spent. And then there's the sound quality, which is just about perfect ("Buffalo Soldier" seems a bit flat, but it doesn't do anything to bring down the quality at all). The liner notes by Scott Schinder is well worth the read, and the packaging is overall very well done. I'm going to make this simple. No cd collection is complete without at least one Bob Marley cd. If you only feel the need to own only one Bob Marley cd, then "Gold" is the way to go.

A perfect Bob Marley collection, such an awesome CD to listen to on these nice summer days. There aren't too many songs I can think of that were forgotten, this is a much better CD than Legends or any other Bob Marley collection. This is the one you want!

I'm a long time Bob Marley fan and I bought Gold mainly for the car, although it'll come in nicely when guests are over and I just want to play a good variety of his music. The remastered sound is stellar. It's night and day! 99% of the time remasters are the way to go. And don't worry about buying them again someday (again) if you do replace a few favorite artists with remasters. These are so excellent even if they do find a way to further improve them, these will always do the trick.
I've done alot of comparisons between non-remastered original releases and remasters. Almost always I've opted to replace, yes replace the originals. There is no reason to listen to the inferior edition. Now, Gold has no previous edition. You could look at it like an upgrade to Legend if you like. It's more comprehensive and includes not only alot more material but a more even amount of songs from each of Marley's albums. I'm in the process of upgrading all my Bob Marley albums to remastered versions and I got this Gold album mainly for the car so I would have just the right amount there. I usually like to have 1 or 2 cd editions of a variety of artists so I have a good mix of each artist. I could list all the tracks on this album but they're already listed. With the exception of "Three Little Birds" and "Easy Skanking" this album has everything from the remastered Legend album plus alot more. If you want just one disc, get Legend or One Love but if you want two, this is the one.

This collection will help you "Lively Up Yourself",

"Gold" is just about the perfect Bob Marley collection out there. It's got over 30 songs on two discs, lots of photos and a history of the band, and it all comes at a good price. If you want to get into Bob Marley's amazing music, this is the perfect place to go. I can only wonder what it would have been like if Bob Marley were still alive today. Well anyway, this dual-disc collection is definitely hands-down worth the investment. Thanks for the time, and peace.

Great Marley Overview,

This compilation features great sound, far better than on my CD copy of Legend from the 1980s. The only omission I don't understand is Three Little Birds. That aside, this gives casual fans just about all the Bob Marley they'll ever need, and it does so at a great price.

Several here have already written lengthy reviews that I agree with, so I'll just hit two key points:
1. IF YOU'RE NEW TO BOB MARLEY OR REGGAE IN GENERAL, THIS SET IS A GREAT PLACE TO START! It has pretty much all the hits from his entire career as well as some lesser known gems. I'm not even a big reggae fan, but my wife got me hooked on Bob Marley, and after hearing the 14 or so cuts on the "Legend" cd, I wanted more. Here, across 34 tracks on 2 cd's, there's just not many songs you'll feel compelled to skip. If the price of this 2cd set is still a little high, you may consider the multi-platinum "Legend" cd instead, but be warned: "Legend" gives you just 14 or so tracks while "Gold" is just a coupla bucks more and gives you more than twice that (34) and includes every song on Legend except one. 2. Unfortunately, the one song omitted on this set is a huge one. "Three Little Birds" is one of Marley's most instantly infectious songs, with an ultra catchy chorus that can't help but put a bounce in your step ("Don't worry... about a thing; cause every little thing, is gonna be alright!"). It's clearly a signature song of his and would definitely be track #1 on any reggae compilation I put together. It's easily the favorite Marley cut for both me and my wife, and we rarely agree on much when it comes to music! And yet it couldn't be included in a 2 disc collection of what is supposed to be Bob Marley's "best" songs? Pathetic. I'm still glad I upgraded my Legend cd to this as it's more complete and the remastered sound is fuller and richer than my old "Legend" cd, but the compiler of this set clearly felt they couldn't include every song from "Legend" for fear of making the "Legend" title completely irrelevent, but the fact of the matter is, they should have left off something else! Or better yet, just include everything from Legend and make this cd a small amount more and reduce the price of "Legend" to better differentiate the two titles. So the music here is great, but the marketing on this stinks, and that's the only reason this set doesn't get 4 or even 5 stars from me!!
