More captivating than I expected...,

This review is from: Gold Dust (Hardcover)
I just picked this book up at the store where I work to read during lunch, but got so absorbed in it that I wound up taking it home and reading it all the way through. It's well researched and well written. As the other reviewer said, "it IS amazing what these people went through to get to El Dorado; California".
I had not previously placed the 1849 Gold Rush in proper historical perspective. As the author points out, along with the Civil War, the Gold Rush of 1848-1850 was the seminal event of the 19th century for Americans. It impacted upon so many different facets of what being an American was then: transportation, military, economic, "social", political, etc. I would call this book a "sleeper" because it sort of sneaked into my consciousness and then really became a delight to read.
