The best collection of Engelbert's music,
By
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
Engelbert was a brilliant balladeer as this collection proves. This double CD of Engelbert's music includes all his British and American hits from his best years (it omits a minor UK hit from the year 2000 - How to win your love) together with the best of his other recordings.
Despite living for much of his career in America, Engelbert was less successful in the American singles charts although Release me made the top five and After the lovin' (which didn't chart in the UK) made the top ten in America. Engelbert began his career in spectacular style with a cover of Release me, originally a country song, which stayed at number one in the UK for six weeks, breaking the long run of number ones enjoyed by the Beatles, whose double-sided single Penny Lane / Strawberry fields forever peaked at number two. After such a huge success with an old country song, Engelbert recorded more covers of country songs during his career, two others (There goes my everything, Am I that easy to forget) also becoming UK top three hits for him. The last waltz (my favorite Engelbert song) replaced another classic (Scott McKenzie's San Francisco) at the top of the UK charts and stayed there for four weeks. Engelbert had four other UK top ten hits (A man without love, Les bicyclettes de Belsize, The way it used to be, Winter world of love), three other UK top twenty hits (I'm a better man, Another time another place, Too beautiful to last) and another hit that just missed the UK top twenty (Sweetheart). There have been many compilations of his music, but this is the best available, whether from a British or an American perspective. His chart history may be different in the two countries but the compilers have included everything that matters to both sets of fans.

Best E.H. Anthology,
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
A far better 1960s-1970s E.H. collection than the "Greatest Hits" (a paltry ten tracks) and the "Ultimate Collection" (half the tracks of "Gold" for almost the same price). Excellent sound quality and booklet as well.

Engelbert's best compilation by FAR,

44 tracks should tell you something. But the real greatness lies in the fact that there are many cuts that you just could not find on CD - until now. Songs like "We Made It Happen" and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", for instance, have been darn near impossible to get on CD previously. Now you can hear them in fresh, clear digital sound. My old LPs, unfortunately, can't live up to that.
All the hits, of course, are also included. Engelbert displays why he has, without a doubt IMO, the greatest voice of any male artist ever. The guy has some phenomenal pipes. I wish we could get the full original albums from Engelbert during the 1967-70 period put out on CD since there are certainly several more cuts I'd like culled from those releases. But that may or may not ever happen. This collection comes closer than any other - definitely worthy of the "Gold" moniker. Guess I'll just break out the original LPs (which I've recorded into MP3s) for those worthy cuts not found here. They've already squeezed as many songs onto this 2-CD set as possible.

I highly recommend this CD for people who are missing some of Engelbert's songs because they were not available on CD version anywhere. The recondings sounds great and you get 44 songs for price of one CD!.

A Good Collection from the Early Years,
By
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
This double cd contains many hard to find songs from the original Parrot label. Having borrowed a few of my mom's albums 25yrs ago and never returning them, I find it hard to beleive there are so many compilation and live albums, that these first few albums were never released on cd, Release Me, The Last Waltz, and A Man Without Love. These are E.H.'s most memorable songs. These albums came out when I was around 7yrs old and now at 43, I think this is some of the best music ever recorded. It's still missing a few of my favorites like, A Man and A Woman, and From Here To Eternity, the string arrangements are absolutely gorgeous.I played these songs to serenade my girlfriend, who is now my wife, on summer nights sitting out on the porch swing. I would like to see the original albums in their entirety put on cd or two albums on one for the whole Parrot collection.

For fans, and even just those who enjoy good vocal presentation, this is a "must have" collection. Every hit and the best of his songs that were not hits but got frequent airplay on (at the time) Easy Listenting stations are here. The sound quality is superb. I highly recommend this set.

This collection sat on my wishlist for a long time, and now I wonder why I waited. Everything -- Engelbert's voice and the song selections -- is warm -- even the sad, heartbreak songs. I didn't want to turn it off. And the value! It's a lot of music for the price.
(If you like Engelbert, you may also like Patrizio Buanne.)

One Great Vocalist,

Wow! If you want to hear singing done to perfection with both power and smoothness this is the album. It is becomong one of my favorites and the more i listen to it the better it gets. Engelbert is without a doubt one of the best vocalists to ever sing and this Cd will prove it. His range and vocal quality is almost perfection. I am sad i am just now discovering what a great singer he was. In a world that is full of mediocre singers with very little talent it is a treasured find to discover Engelbert who shows all others how its done. My personal favorites on this Cd are My World, A Place in the Sun and Love Me with All Your Heart of course After the Lovin but its hard to find more than two bad songs on all this double Cd 44 song collection. I highly recommend it. Love songs sung with power. One great vocalist and one great Cd.
