Truth can be stranger than fiction.,
By "piffet" (California, USA, Planet Earth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gold Fever (Hardcover)
This book is based on the real-world experiences of author Dr. Tom K. Stern. It is Dr. Sterns Phillipine adventure lived through the eyes of his fictional re-incarnation: Dr. Todd Ellison. The names may have been changed to protect the innocent. The more outlandish the scenario, the more likely it really happened just as it is written. It has been said that truth is stranger than fiction. Gold Fever is a thin read (296 pages), that is fat on details. It is a tall and engrossing tale. Lots of details about the jungle rebels, etc.Dr. Stern is just now releasing his latest book: Vatican Gold. I hope this leads to a trilogy. How about: Hollywood Gold? Gold Fever would make an excellent movie, and I imagine Vatican Gold will as well. I gave the book (Gold Fever) 4-stars because it was too short! I cannot wait for the Dr. Stern gold series to hit the big screen! Welcome to Hollywood, Dr. Ellison!

I loved it...,

Once in awhile I find a book that comes to life on the pages before me. This is one of them. My heart raced as I traipsed through the jungle and hunted for treasure right along with the characters. The setting is simultaneously beautiful and dangerous. The love story captured my heart while the action packed drama fed my desire for justice. I read it in one sitting and didn't want it to end. Awesome novel.

A Great Story,
By R Worthington (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gold Fever (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading Gold Fever because the main character, a doctor, seems like a person one might meet in real life. The story takes him on an adventure filled with a cast of intriguing characters who come together on quest for a golden treasure. The search is a roller coaster ride filled with treachery and high drama. En route, the doctor is faced with ethical problems he needs to solve but the author also manages to include humor and romance to propel the journey forward.

To my surprise I read this through at one sitting, and I don't usually read novels, especially not action thrillers. But this grabs you and holds on throughout, not only because the suspense is so well paced, but because it has a ring of authenticity, communicating the sense of an exotic, alien culture. In that regard, it almost doesn't read like fiction, since Stern's ability to put you in the scene and to fill in the factual details shows a dazzling virtuousity.

Fun reading while becoming acquainted with a part of the world not neccessarily thought about on a daily basis. I enjoyed the medical refences that Dr Stern incorporated in his descriptions. I found the correlation to history and nonfiction to be a great combination.Good reading if you like adventure and history related intrique in a modern setting.

Gold Fever,

This book by Tom Stern is a masterpiece; a beautifully crafted romantic, exotic, adventure novel. I just couldn't put it down from start to finish. The novel opens up with an intensely dramatic life and death operating room scene and the pace picks up from there as Dr. Todd Ellison, in an Indiana Jones style adventure, searches the jungles of a remote island in the Philipines for the massive stores of gold bullion buried by the invading Japanese army during the frenetic dying days of WW2. I can't wait for the movie that is sure to follow.

Wow! The book kept getting better and better and ends with high action, heart-pounding excitement. It would make a great movie. The characters were interesting and the descriptions of the country, its people, and culture were excellent. I loved the book.

I loved this book. It's a truly exciting adventure, very clearly written with close attention to detail and an easy-to-read style. A constant crescendo right to the exhilarating finale. An incredible effort for a first novel.

Love and Action Can Go Hand in Hand,
By R H (CA United States) - See all my reviews

A Good ReadA very realistic novel, written with the accuracy of a physician and the heart of a man. It has more twists and turns than a dancing anaconda. It gives us a view of one of our best allies, the Philippines, and humanizes the Filipinos he meets. It's an exciting action story, but at its heart, it's probably the most truthful account, from a man's point of view, of what it's like for two powerful adults to be in love with each other I've ever read. I'd like to know a little more about what makes the two main characters tick, but I enjoyed it, even though it's not kind of novel I normally read. I give it four and half stars, highly recommended. |
