5.0 out of 5 stars Gold - Yes ..... Greatest Hits? ..... I Think Not August 11, 2008
Format:Audio CD
You won't find me panning any Ella Fitzgerald CD, arguably the greatest female song stylist of the 20th Century. And I'm not about to change with this one, even though the title of the album takes liberty with the term "greatest hits."

The thing is, counting the nine she had as the star vocalist of the Chick Webb Orchestra in 1938/39 (and which she took over following Chick's death in 1939 until 1942), she had some 60 legitimate hit singles up to her last in 1968. In other words, those of her single releases, primarily for the Decca label, that received enough air- and jukebox-play, along with record sales, to reach, and often impact heavily upon, the national charts.

This volume represents some of the best LP cuts from her widely-acclaimed Verve albums (Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter (tracks 2, 8, 15, 18, 20) ... Duke Ellington (track 9) .... Irving Berlin (tracks 6, 16) ... Richard Rodgers And Lorenz Hart (tracks 17, 19) ... George And Ira Gershwin (tracks 5, 12, 13, 22) ... Harold Arlen (track 11) .... Jerome Kern (track 21) .... Johnny Mercer (tracks 3, 11) ... Songbook) - but none here were among her "greatest hits" in the accepted sense of the word. And that might be misleading to those of the younger generation perhaps wanting to sample the great Ella for the first time.
