These early Axton cuts lack the warmth and sonorous depth of Hoyt's great deep baritone pipes as heard in his wonderful '80s recordings. The production, sound quality, and musicianship suffers by comparison, as well. There is some interesting music here, but if you like it "nice and easy," mainly country, this one will give you "nice and rough," mainly rock.

This album, if you can find it, is a genuine gem. It shows the warmth and naive energy he brought to most of his work. This has a lot of the early stuff and is a must have if you're a Hoyt Axton fan. We all will miss him. You cannot be disappointed with this album....sure, it's not the best quality super-fidelity recording and there are a lot of his best songs not included, but the ones that are here will rock you and touch your heart.
