Book Description

May 4, 2002

It was the story that rocked the 2002 Winter Olympics and directed the world's gaze to figure skating.

Canadian champions Jamie Salé and David Pelletier finished second to Elena Berezhnaia and Anton Sikharulidze by the narrowest of margins in the Olympic figure skating pairs final. But a judge later admitted she'd been pressured to put the Russians first. Acknowledging a wrong had been done, the International Olympic Committee awarded a second gold medal to Salé and Pelletier: Their silver was upgraded to a second gold after an uproar, ensuing controversy, and an investigation revealed that indeed a judge had succumbed to pressure to vote for the Russian pair instead. The twosome's story has placed a spotlight on the sport and will result in an overhaul of the way it will be judged in the future.

Gold on Ice: The Salé and Pelletier Story features more than 60 stunning, full-color pictures documenting the skating pair's early lives, as well highlights from their controversial Olympic program.

Chapters include:

  • The Early Days
  • Two Solitudes
  • Together at last
  • The Olympic Games
  • The Scandal Erupts
  • Happy Ending.

Salé and Pelletier embody the true spirit of the Olympic ideal, and have established themselves as world-class athletes. They have thrilled audiences everywhere, and here for the first time is their story that is sure to inspire legions of fans and young skaters across the country and around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Brightest and the Best, September 27, 2002

What a Love Story! Anyone who watched the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City couln't help but feel for this young couple who skated their hearts out only to have their Olympic gold snatched from them by judges with their own political agenda. We will always remember their tears of sadness, then their tears of happiness when it was decided they did deserve a gold medal around their necks! The fact that they are a couple in real life made the story even more sweet. This book, while short on words, is not short on pictures which makes it well worth the money. These are two young people who definately have their hearts in the right place and they deserve every good thing that comes their way!

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 Thumbs Up!!, February 9, 2003

This review is from: Gold on Ice: The Sale and Pelletier Story (Paperback)
This book has some great color photos of Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. It also has good detail on how they each got into the sport of figure skating. There were a couple problems that I had with the book:

1. The other did not write original captions for the pictures. They are exerps from the text.

2. The author wrote that Salé and Pelletier received scores of 5.7's and 5.8's from the judges for their long program. They actually received 5.8's and 5.9's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice story of the Olympic champions, December 1, 2004

This review is from: Gold on Ice: The Sale and Pelletier Story (Paperback)
How nice for these skaters to be remembered in print for something other than one tough moment in their otherwise stellar careers - the Salt Lake Olympic Judging debacle. Smith gives a warm, intimate account of Sale and Pelletier, from their early training to their close personal relationship and other athletic triumphs. Recommend for fans of this pair, figure skating, and anyone who wants to learn more about this charming twosome and their REAL story....not just one moment.
