A Good Introduction, May 7, 2011

This 2CD Collection focuses mainly on the middle years of John Coltrane's musical career. It has most of his more well-known songs and they come from this period (excepting "Blue Train" in 57', all of these songs come from 59'-64'). His last two/three years of recording are not included and for the casual listener that's a good thing because the later music is inaccessible to the uninitiated. This is a good place to start listening to Coltrane. Other songs you might look into not included here are "India," "After The Rain," "Greensleeves," and "Dear Lord."
Beyond this, Coltrane's signature album is A LOVE SUPREME and though it does require repeated listening, it is accessible and very rewarding. His signature version of his biggest song "My Favorite Things" is on Live at Newport and on the Impulse label very best of compilation. GOLD has the studio version of "My Favorite Things" and "Part One - Acknowledgement" off the A Love Supreme Album.
