5.0 out of 5 stars Supreme EBM Techno: A Good Sound Track to Your Workout, September 27, 2007
By
D. W. Dage (Covington, Georgia United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Gold Und Liebe (Reis) (Audio CD)
I was in Germany in 1982-83 and heard these guys in the discos there and loved the sound. Thanks to the miracle of the internet and Amazon, I can return to those days. When choosing just one DAF album, this was the one. While not having the mega hit of Der Mussolini from "Alles Gut", this album is better balanced rhythmically making it a good choice for those looking for some good exercise music.

The first song, Liebe Auf Den Ersten Blick (Love at first sight) has a more commercial techno sound that would later characterize the sound of that decade. Not unpleasant but it starts to get monotonous after the 3rd minute. El Que is a good dance track with a fast beat worthy of a good fast workout. Percussion was always strong point for this duo. Sex Under Water is an interesting and fun song. It helps to know a bit of German but the basic idea is having fun with some water lovin' and the vocals with the heavy breathing adequately carry the mood.

Was Tragst Du Heute Nacht (What are you wearing tonight) is a strong dance tune with a more solid, fast beat that previous songs on this CD. Yes, I corrected the printed title to match what the song is actually about and the English translation. Sorry. But this tune will get your blood pumping. The driving, frantic force of that tune is relieved somewhat by Goldenes Spielzueg which has a nice melody behind the solid beat and even a slightly moralistic flavor.

The quality of the songs improve the further along one listens. Ich Will (I want) has a more driving, raw feel to it as the vocalist seems to sing deeper here with a more demanding and militant attitude. Like most tracks on this album, it runs close to or over 120 beats per minute, making it a good choice for a workout. The tempo, urgency and quality culminates with track 7, Muskel (Muscle). I believe this is the best of the lot, as it compels a body to move and to do it hard, complete with hard breathing in the background. Track 8, Absolute Korperkontrolle is another favorite, which is all about heavy, fast percussion. In fact that's all there is there; no vocals or synth wave to be found. #9, Vershwende Deine Jugend is a hard, rough, raw and driving track. Again, it is fast and inspires a body into working out hard.

By this time, if this has been your exercise soundtrack, you're going to be winded and worn out. Track #10, Greif Nach Den Sternen (Reach for the Stars) is as close to a cool down as you're going to get. While still running at over 85 BPM, it runs very steady and will feel slow in comparison to the other songs. But it does not drag, so you're still going to feel like moving, only with less intensity.

It's the intensity and consistency of the beat that made me choose this for a workout soundtrack. Plus having some history with the Neue Deutsche Welle doesn't hurt either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Body Dance, June 22, 2000
This review is from: Gold Und Liebe (Reis) (Audio CD)
D.A.F. were one of the first minimalist type synthesizer dance bands from the early 80s. Starting as a multipiece, they pared down to a duo in 1980 with their second release, "Alles ist gut". "Gold und Liebe", their third release, is a dark sweaty excursion into euro-dance circa 1981. Robert Gorl provides all of the music, mainly pounding drums and dark brutish synthesizers, while Gabi Delgado brings forth the heat as he growls and purrs his way through the LP/CD. Gabi sings in German, but don't let that drive you away. The music is very powerful... sweat and leather on the dance floor. Don't miss this one. One of the real precursors to trance and techno.

3.0 out of 5 stars Less inspired than their previous efforts, June 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Gold Und Liebe (Reis) (Audio CD)
After the landmark albums "Die Kleinen und die Bösen" and "Alles ist gut", the release of "Gold und Liebe" was followed with little interest, since there were no surprises: this album is a poppier follow-up to "Alles ist gut" (the structure is almost the same), sacrifying their dangerous aura in favour of a more hedonistic form of pleasure. Their sound has a little bit more of colour, but it is much easier to find sequences or texts alike to other from their previous albums. Nicer but also showing some void.
