4.0 out of 5 stars Together again, at length
Fans of Lionel Richie and the Commodores better brace themselves for a long listening experience. This CD contains 32 songs, most of them above the normal length, spanning from the 1974 Commodores album "Machine Gun" to the 2001 Lionel Richie album "Renaissance".

Here are some examples:

All Night Long - 6:22
Do It To Me - 6:05

I really love this cd. I just wish it had a few more of my favorites on it. Their absence may be because many of my favorites were not singles or mabye they just didnt have room....

Fans of Lionel Richie and the Commodores better brace themselves for a long listening experience. This CD contains 32 songs, most of them above the normal length, spanning from the 1974 Commodores album "Machine Gun" to the 2001 Lionel Richie album "Renaissance".

All Night Long - 6:22
Do It To Me - 6:05
Sweet Love - 6:35
Three Times a Lady - 6:40
Still - 5:50
Just To Be Close to You - 6:24
Zoom - 7:05
Jesus Is Love - 6:05

All Lionel Richie's familiar songs are there, except perhaps "Se La" which is a notable omission, but the album also includes some less popular tracks such as "My Destiny" and "Love Oh Love" from Back to Front (1992). Most of the Commodores old favorites are included, and the `70s tracks will have you looking for your disco shoes.

This one is worth adding to your collection if you're a fan of these performers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a collection with all the major hits, April 4, 2006
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
Universal's recent "Gold" collection has been wonderful, providing artists like Olivia Newton-John, Donna Summer and Cher with the best US collections they have ever seen, the recent Lionel Richie/Commodores "Gold" provides no exception.

Unlike "Back To Front" and "The Definitive Collection", Gold provides some of Lionel's big hits that were inexplicitly missing before, such as "My Love" (top 5 hit), "Lady You Bring Me Up" (top 10), "Oh No" (top 5), "Love Will Conquer All" (top 10), "Don't Wanna Lose You" (top 10 AC hit and top 40 pop hit) and "Brick House", possibly Lionel's most famous composition. It's great to get the album versions of these songs.

There are a few missing hits, like "Just For You" and "Se La", but beggers can't be choosers. It would've been nice to have the huge Commodores hit "Nightshift" here as well, but since that song was after Lionel had left, the exclusion is understandable. All in all, this is finally the definitive Lionel hits collection

You can get this cd for only a couple bucks more than Back To Front and The Definitive Collection, and the few $$ more is totally worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soundsgreat, June 24, 2006

A great collection of songs by a great artist. It is so nice to see a greatest hits collection that features all the original full length album versions. I am a big music fan and I hate when greatest hits collections are released with the "watered down" radio versions. It would have been nice if Universal could have tracked down the 12" version of Brickhouse, But hey, I'm not complaining. The sound quality is fantastic as well.

Let's hope Universal releases more greatest hits packages with more full length album versions.

4.0 out of 5 stars He Still Has Endless Love, January 25, 2006
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
It is always amazing to me, when a older artist has a much better feeling for great pop music these days. That has been the case so many great acts within the past few years like Rod Stewart, Sting and Elton John. Nevertheless, when it still is the showcase of artists and love ballads, Lionel Richie remains supreme. Throughout the 70's as a member of The Commodores, and in the 80's on his own, he has been a dominant force as a composer and a influential singer/songwriter. Although his career fizzled down in the 90's and today, his older tracks are still as popular then as they are now.

Lionel Richie & The Commodores Gold, is a double album reflection of Lionel's days on his own and as the prime writer and performer from The Commodores. The album delivers well at showcasing Lionel and his vast variety of some of the best Motown songs around then and now. The collection delivers a lot of great pop songs like standards Endless Love with Diana Ross, All Night Long, Dancing On The Ceiling, Penny Lover, the oscar-winning Say You Say Me from Whit Nights, and much more. The album also showcases Lionel's days with The Commodores well with classics the infamously irrestible Brick House, Three Times A Lady, Still, and Sail On and Easy. Although the album is mainly about Lionel, the album still does overshadow some great classic songs from The Commodores like their classic track Nightshift, and some great Lionel tracks like Time, and his recently relased single Just For You.

All in all, Lionel Richie & The Commodores happens to be a well conjured hits collection for die hard Lionel Richie fans, or anybody who doesn't own a Lionel Richie or Commodores record. I still loves those classic songs, and if you do, truly do, Lionel Richie & The Commodores Gold sail on and get this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars More complete than other Lionel Richie/Commodores collections!, February 18, 2006
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
I'm definitely getting this double CD! All of Lionel Richie and the Commodores' hits are on here! And after seeing another review, full length songs,5, 6 to 7 minutes long in some cases, not the cut it down to 3:46 to 4 minutes on the single 79-minute CDs! I love longer songs and this collection proves that. Richie had a lot of hits from 1974-1982 with the Commodores and continued after 1982-1983 and afterwards with his solo career having over a dozen No. 1 hits. I thought the Commodores made some good albums after Lionel left, but not with the sales momentum as his. The Commodores were heavy on the funk with hits like Brickhouse, Machine Gun, Lady (You Bring Me Up) and others. The ballads like Still, Easy, Three Times and others are still classics. Lionel's own songs like All Night Long, Running With The Night, Dancing On the Ceiling, Say You Say Me, Penny Lover, Do It To Me the country flavored Stuck On You and others are still wonderful. I Still like Angel and that he had a hit with "Believe" hitmakers Mark Taylor and Brian Rawling after many hits with James Anthony Carmichael. I also liked his Don't Wanna Lose You with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. At one point in summer 1984, I heard no less than 3 Lionel Richie songs on the radio. I heard Stuck on You more than the others. That's how huge a pop star he was that year with the hits from late-'83's Can't Slow Down. He is such a master of well crafted love songs with pop edges. I liked his last album Just for You two years ago, so he's still doing it.
This collection fully covers his success as a pop star both solo and with a group. I hope he thinks about doing another album with the Commodores soon and making it funky!

5.0 out of 5 stars " GOLD" Lionel Richie, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
A treat for the ears,to listen to this excellent collection of hits from "back in the day". When a "love song" wasn't vulgar, and the vocals were pure and simple romance. His wonderful voice will have you dreaming and wanting to try "Dancing on the Ceiling"!

What a great cd. Almost every song you could want is all in the one collection. I would have had a coniption if Brick House wasn't here. Thankfully it is, along with so many other cool songs, you almost forgot that these few guys had so many up their sleeves. My other favourites are Still, Stuck On You, My Destiny and Ballerina Girl. Lionels voice is still the standout, and to have had such longevity, he has to be as talented as his fans know he is. This is such a great cd. I recommend it so that you can have all these amazing songs together.
