Book Description

8 and up
One quiet morning on the banks of the rolling Sacramento River, an old saw mill worker looked down and saw a glittering lump half the size of a pea. Little did he know, but that tiny nugget would change American history forever, as the largest western migration ever experienced brought the California wilderness onto the world stage.

Gold Mine! follows Charlie and Alice, two idealistic young '49ers, and their faithful mule Nugget, as they journey west to the new land of opportunity. and find that striking gold may not be as easy as they thought.

Along the way, they encounter some of the most colorful and inspiring figures in California history: Swiss immigrant and entrepreneur John Sutter, African-American mountain man and Crow tribe warrior James Beckwourth, glamorous Irish countess Lola Montez, and even the mythical bandit Joaquin Murieta. All come together in a sequence of humorous and surprising twists, when the silly old miner Peg Leg manages to forget where he left his gold mine! Meanwhile, as the California wilderness is transformed, so is Charlie, when he discovers that the greatest secret to success might be sitting right under his nose.

Based on real personal accounts and diaries, Gold Mine's beautifully hand-drawn frames show the history of the Gold Rush-from the first discovery of gold, to the state constitutional convention, to the boisterous life of the vigilant mining towns- through the eyes of the men and women who lived it. It is a must read for kids, teachers, and history enthusiasts alike

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Gossamer's new series of graphic novels takes historical events and facts and turns them into entertaining tales. This one examines the struggles early settlers faced as they tried to make their fortune in gold rush California. We follow pioneers Charlie and Alice as they travel west across America, encountering a Native American tribe as well as the crazies and swindlers epidemic to the period. The story takes true elements—frontier inflation, the role of women and minorities, dancer Lola Montez, the invention of blue jeans—and weaves a somewhat choppy narrative out of them. Charlie and Alice remain fairly simplistic characters, but the colorful historical figures around them make up for it. The accessible art, reminiscent of classic animation and Tintin, has some charm, although some scenes with anthropomorphic animals (à la Disney) are a bit arch. Still, the intended audience will probably enjoy these touches. A "Fact or Fiction" section at book's end gives more details about the real people and events behind the story.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6–A miner has come to prospect for gold in 1849, accompanied by his sister. They meet the personalities who helped in California's birth from the discovery of gold at Sutter's mill. However, the meandering plot is bogged down by pedantic explanations and facts that interrupt the narrative flow, and the dialogue is dry and flat. The illustrations lack line quality, perspective, and variation, and the portrayals of the Crow people and the Chinese are stereotypes. The Crow are wearing feather bands on their heads, which demonstrates a lack of knowledge of what they wore or how they adorned themselves. The Chinese are even colored an unfortunate shade of yellow. Comic books can be a great device for learning and entertaining, but this one misses the point. Graphic novels, although they rely on visual cues to move the events along, are still literature that must have interesting and fully developed stories.–Joel Bangilan, Houston Public Library, TX
