Editorial Reviews

Review

'After reading The Gold Mine Effect I felt compelled to track Rasmus Ankersen down ... Fascinating man with a real insight into High Performance both for individuals and teams that can be applied to business and sport ... a great read and a fascinating insight into performance.' -- Sir Clive Woodward Ankersen provides a left-field take on high performance, with much food for thought. It's wacky, but it works. -- Emma De Vita, Management Today 'This is a must-read for any athlete or sportsperson looking to reach for the stars.' -- Athletics Weekly 'Rasmus Ankersen's thought-provoking book 'The Gold Mine Effect' I believe will become a timeless classic in the ever evolving understanding of ... the notion of talent. Parts of the book defy long-standing traditions around talent development but his intelligent use of real life experiences in and outside of sport should force anyone to ask: are we really doing everything it takes to produce the next generation of world talent?' -- Mike Forde, Executive Director, Chelsea Football Club

Customer Reviews

I truly enjoyed reading a book about what makes the elite.

I did like the passages about elite performers can be developed from athletes who may not be considered the stars at early stages of their careers.

At 263 pages this book is 260 pages longer than it needs to be. Take away the redundancy, meaningless statistics, and unnecessary sentences and 3 pages is about all you have left. Here is the reader's digest version:

Start young;
Work hard every day;
Poor kids who need to escape poverty start younger and work harder than people with other options.

A nice easy read that makes some very useful points for anyone aspiring or working with athletes aspiring to elite status.
For those with more of an academic interest you will be keen to follow up some of the authors references.
And finally one for any parent or caregiver who has a budding wannabe in their midst.

In today's society we have no idea what it takes to be world class. I truly enjoyed reading a book about what makes the elite.

Disappointed with this book. It came highly regarded but I felt it didn't really have anything particularly original.
I worked hard to stick with it as at times I felt the author was padding it out.
I did like the passages about elite performers can be developed from athletes who may not be considered the stars at early stages of their careers. I am a firm believer that there is, for a variety of reasons, plenty of undeveloped potential in all areas of life but this wasn't enough for me to feel the book wasn't worth reading.
