I bought this to introduce myself to Nina Simone, because until that point I knew she had been an overlooked artist in my exposure to mid-20th century black female singers (which includes Mahalia Jackson, Ssarah Vaughan, Ella, Dinah Washingon, etc.) My first listen was kind of obligatory... after a while songs began to stand out... and now I really treasure Nina Simone as one of the most important singers of the 2th c.

Standouts for me on this album, include the galvanzing 'Four Women,' the loving 'Don't You Pay Them no Mind,' and an otherwise unexceptional number from Hair (Ain't got no - I got life ) becomes a rousing anthem. I don't like sad songs per se, but when you stumble across a great one, the entire world's humanity sits right there in front of you. Such is the impossibly sad/pleading "ne me quitte pas." Simone is just fine and dandy with minimal accompaniment but when she gets the full treatment with a better than average orchestration, you end up with the bright, cheering classic, 'Feeling Good.' Driving around on a warm spring day, with the sunroof open, with 'Feeling Good' blaring is just about as good as life gets.

I'm also a relative newcomer to the music of Nina Simone. I'd heard a handful of tracks by her over the years, enough to impress me and whet my interest in getting a proper compilation of her music. The problem, if you've noticed, is that there are MANY collection of Nina Simone's music on the market, spanning several decades of her career and having been put out by various labels (RCA, Verve, Columbia, etc.). Which one has the best tunes? Very hard to say, especially for someone that is new to her music. I saw this 2-CD set in a local shop last year and decided that it would serve as a good introduction to her music for me. Well ... maybe this was a case of "too much too soon" for my tastes. There are some stunning tracks on here, but there are also more than a handful of slow, tortured ballads and show tunes that just bore me to tears. Maybe it's just a case of some of this music not being my cup of tea.

Stylistically, Nina Simone covers a lot of territory, from "diva jazz" to soul, blues, and gospel, pop music and show tunes. She has a strong, powerful voice that is very expressive and emotional. In fact, some of these songs are so gut-wrenching and dramatic that it's painful to listen to them. Others have an uplifting, redemptive power to them. But I'd venture to say that by being so diverse, and covering so much musical ground, she ends up diluting the power of some of her material. For every amazing track like "Mississippi Goddam", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", and "I Put A Spell On You" there are also clunkers like her cover of "Brown Eyed Handsome Man." At least we are spared her version of "Mr. Bogangles" on this collection.

This 2-CD set contains 35 tracks and some of them are lengthy ones, witness the 10-minute version of "Sinnerman.
