4.0 out of 5 stars a mixed bag, but worth the read
Some of the elements of the story were wonderful: the lost splendor of the jungle mansion, the mystical love story, death by sword, army ants attacking, and the hero, Salvador, who is so incredibly endearing, despite his Latin jealousy. Plus, you get to revisit Wolf and Storm of "Love, Cherish Me." I have never heard of a writer doing that in a non-serial work. There...

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge "Ick Factor" Quotient
At first, reading this novel was fun, like watching adventure serials. There were sword fights, wild escapes, corny villains -- it was fun.

Then, an evil, homicidal nun tried to rape the heroine. Hmmm. For some reason, the book lost me when that happened. Other violent acts added to the "Ick Factor" quotient.

Also, the hero and heroine don't meet until...

Plus, you get to revisit Wolf and Storm of "Love, Cherish Me." I have never heard of a writer doing that in a non-serial work. There are some disturbing events that are nauseatingly awful, but the world isn't rosy. It is a memorable read, and I really love the cover of the first edition the best. Why they changed it, I don't know-- I hope to find another copy of it someday.

Then, an evil, homicidal nun tried to rape the heroine. Hmmm. For some reason, the book lost me when that happened. Other violent acts added to the "Ick Factor" quotient.

Also, the hero and heroine don't meet until about two-thirds of the way through the story. And Salvador, who has been true hero material throughout the book, suddenly becomes a jealous, distrustful misogynist. Was it something in the water?

I enjoyed reading this story but not as much as Forever My Love. I disliked having one spanish word in a paragraph and I am bilingual. I just thought it was distracting. I really like this author but this one just didn't quite live up to what I expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply enchanting, December 19, 2009
This review is from: And Gold Was Ours (Love Spell historical romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book in highschool, and i have to say i fell in love with it. It wasnt like most boring romances where everyone stays in the same place and there are only arguments. This one had just the right amount of action, romance, and mystery. I recommended it to my cousin and she fell in love with it too. If you are easily bothered by cruel people i wouldnt suggest it, as the half brother is a complete jerk, but other than that its simply amazing. I wish i could someday write as well as Rebecca.

This review is from: And Gold Was Ours (Love Spell historical romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
The story begins in 1548 with a legend of gold in El Dorado in the jungle of Peru where a young Spanish nobleman, who has lost all but his title, seeks gold--and finds it--to win his lady love whose father won't let her wed a poor man. But when he returns to claim her, he learns she has died. Separated in one life, they will seek each other in another, 300 years later.

In 1848 in Madrid, one man's cruelty and greed lead to his death and an oath of revenge. Amidst such treachery, young Aurora is growing up a blue-eyed Castilian beauty who has visions in which a young man rides to her on a white Arabian horse. Though he wears the clothes of another time, he is real enough to win her love. Meanwhile, Salvador, the charismatic son of a deceased nobleman, returns home and kills his stepfather when he catches the man in the act of brutalizing Salvador's mother. Knowing his stepfather's son, Don Juan, has influence with Queen Isabella and will seek revenge using the power of the throne, Salvador flees to the New World--to Texas--where he has relatives. Oh, yes, he takes his white Arabian horse... On the way there, he meets a young newlywed couple fleeing some evil from Spain and going to Peru. The husband of the young couple is actually Aurora's older brother. (Are you still with me?) Then everyone ends up in Peru.

It's a complex tale (some might say convoluted) involving a richly woven tapestry of people and exotic places. I have to say at times it was a bit slow, particularly the scenes in Peru. If occasional lines of Spanish and long Spanish names don't bother you (there is a "List of Players" in the beginning), and you like a story with many threads, including some appearances by a ghost from the past, you may just like this one. It seems to have a bit of everything...a trip down the Amazon river, natural disasters, a fire ant attack, curses and legends, etc. There's even a glimpse of El Lobo (the wolf) and his love (the hero and heroine from Love, Cherish Me--a wonderful romance).

While certainly entertaining, I don't think it's among Brandewyne's best. For that I recommend Rose of Rapture and Love, Cherish Me
