3.0 out of 5 stars This is as good as it gets for his solo career, February 21, 2009
By
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
GOLD does a decent job of capturing the best of Daltrey's solo work. From the Leo Sayer penned numbers of Daltrey's solo debut to his more recent live recordings; GOLD is a good representation of Daltrey's work. Never putting together the most cohesive work on his own, this package is probably the best way to get a taste of Daltrey's work away from The Who. His strongest cuts like Steve Gibbons's "One of the Boys" that plays like a sequel to "My Generation" and Downes and Parr's tribute to Keith Moon "Under a Raging Moon," stand with any of Daltrey's best vocals from The Who and you'll find any number of interesting songs here like Daltrey covering Springsteen's "Born to Run" and a soulful Daltrey singing Ballad's "Proud" in full out R&B mode. The annoying thing about collections like this is liner notes that mention "fiery cuts" like Daltrey doing "Gimme Some Lovin'" and then not including them in the CD's. This set should satisfy anyone's curiosity about Daltrey's solo work and it stands as a nice companion to his stunning work with The Who.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Hit and Miss Collection With a Few Nice Rarities..., May 23, 2008
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
Fans of Daltrey's vocals will enjoy this collection, particularly the first disc which collects songs from his more well-received early solo albums. There's not a lot new there, though, if you're already familiar with his solo work. The second disc has a lot of potential, but the song-selection is somewhat frustrating (particularly when it comes to picking songs from Daltrey's good-to-excellent "Rocks in the Head" album). There are a handful of really nice rare live tracks, though, including a version of "Born to Run" that'll have you wondering why he chose to do this song in concert. Finally, the collection closes with a "new" studio track that shows there's more to Daltrey's vocal technique than just macho bluster. Overall, it's a fine collection to have and definitely worth picking up on the cheap BUT, if you like what you hear, be sure to get a copy of "Rocks in the Head". You won't regret it!

2.0 out of 5 stars a few gems and a lot of junk, June 30, 2007

there's a handful of great songs, but they are all either on the first album (worth owning on it's own) or on the soundtrack with "free me" or the "under a raging moon" album. problem is this comp doesn't include many of the keepers off the first album or raging moon. at least the list price is pretty low.
