With the extreme depression in the current economy everyone is looking for value. I began researching gold as a safe haven for some of my savings. At the suggestion of a friend I looked into the Chinese Panda coins. It was frustrating finding reliable sources on the internet, at least in English. I did discover, Peter Anthony's web site, [...] and found it to be very informative. Wanting to learn more I emailed Mr. Anthony about his findings. He couldn't have been more helpful and after several exchanges I found out about his years of time researching Panda coins and keeping his own database of circulation numbers. His knowledge, interest, and kindness led to the purchase his book.

What I discovered is that the "Gold and Silver Panda Buyer's Guide" is a very comprehensive study, statistically and historically about all that is Panda, coin wise that is! His years of following these coins is quite evident. The book serves as a great resource if you have a specific coin you want to see and learn about; or as in my case, to browse the history of the various years, types, mintage, values and metals. The photography is excellent, far better than most numismatic books I have read. Each coin discussed has a photo of both the obverse and reverse sides. In many cases there is a detail photo providing greater clarity to Mr.Anthony's discussion. I say discussion, as that is exactly how the text is written. You get the feeling Mr.Anthony is right next to you talking you through the story of each coin.

Obviously this is a very specific niche, Panda Coins, but I don't think I have come across any book, in any niche that is as complete a read on their topic as is Mr.Anthony's "Gold and Silver Panda Coin Buyer's Guide." This book is hidden gold and a 24 karat five star recommendation.

The most interesting part of this book is how the author was able to get full color photos of every panda produced since the series began in 1982. The photos are of actual coins and not simply ones lifted from promotional material. Additionally, great effort was taken to document the history behind each year and the highlights or good fortune, and pitfalls or misfortune which befell the pandas year to year. The book is riddled with history and anecdotes which add a nice flavor to the standard reporting of coin weights, diameters, and mintages etc... The book goes into detail to explain how and why certain pandas may be more difficult to find than others and provides a more plausible estimate of how many of the standard issue MS coins still exist in uncirculated condition. A well researched and thought out book that is an inspiration to numismatists, makes a good stand alone coffee table book for a family, or can pay for itself easily in a single transaction for the seasoned investor. Fantastic!

I have had the Panda Book for about a month now, and it has saved me many heart-aches, and more money than any other book, review, or internet search I have done. If you are interested in buying, better yet, investing into this wonderful Chinese Currency, you MUST have this book.

Where there are very few Panda Coins issued as compared to U.S. coins, the Chinese are just coming to the point of collecting them in mass, and due I suppose to the low mintage numbers, fake coins are sold nearly everywhere you look, especially on auction sites.

This book will show you what is real and what is not. This is a must have, as I have said. So easy to use, very much worth the investment. I will venture to say, it will pay for itself in the first one or two Panda considerations you may have in mind to buy.

Highly recommended. Very Highly.

A fun to read book with great pictures of just about every panda that has been minted since 1982. Peter spares no effort in pointing out the details. What makes this book special is Peter's estimate of the surviving gold pandas (pun intended) numbers after thorough market research and observations. This is indispensable information for the panda collector trying to ride the decade long precious metal bull market. Buy the book before the coin to avoid costly mistakes!
