If you are looking for a definitive CD with the majority of the tracks in true living stereo, this is the one. Of all of the collections, this is his best effort. Not only do you get the best from Smokey & the Miracles, but you also get Smokey as an individual. This is one of the only CDs that has THE Best Stereo version of I Don't Blame You At All. There is no filler here. Pure great Soul music from the 60's. The only two hits missing are Do It and Love Machine by just the Miracles. Otherwise, for the first time listener or for the veteran fan, this is the CD to purchase. Great sound, production, stereo, and that magic voice of Smokey. This is a winner. Pure Gold!

These days, there are just so many classic acts of the Motown era that've been all but forgotten, in favor of soul wannabe acts like Ciara, Ashanti, and Ruben Studdard from American Idol that just don't have the appeal of the classic days of soul that were just astonishing. That happened long ago, especially with Smokey Robinson. Even though he hasn't scored a hit record in years, the soulfulness he has made for so many eras of lovers has not lost its edge. The songs still are just delightful to listen to. Now, another hits record has surfaced that shines so bright on one of the most classic singers of all time.

The 2006 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Gold, is a nearly definitive, and well-conjured hits record that showcases Smokey, and 40 of his biggest hits on his own, and with his defiant era as a part of The Miracles. The Motown classics here have all be restored very well, and bring out the best songs in a longtime. The album includes great classics like Tears Of A Clown, the somber Tracks Of My Tears, Ooh Baby Baby, Shop Around, and many other classics. The collection also delivers brightly with Smokey on his solo efforts, a little better than last year's My World: Definitive Collection on songs like Let Me Be The Clock, Crusin', the #1 R&B soul hit Being With You, and Just To See Her. Sadly though, the collection overlooks a few great tracks from Smokey's solo efforts like I Must Have Made Love To You A Thousand Times, and his 1990 #2 hit Everything You Touch.

All in all, despite a few overlooked songs, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Gold is a delightful reintroduction to one of the most soulful songers, and classic Motown groups of all time. If you love some of the classic era Motown than this is a must buy for you, as well as die hard Smokey Robinson fans.

I bought this compilation because it's filled with so many great songs. It even has some of Smokey's solo tunes. I am however disappointed with the "remastering" of a couple of key tracks on the first disk. Both Oh Baby Baby and The Tracks of My Tears sound terrible on this compilation. I'm sure there is some high quality recordings of these two songs out there. If audio quality is important to you pass on this particular comp.

SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES-GOLD: Uber-talent SMOKEY ROBINSON was not only one of MOTOWN's most popular singing stars, he pulled double duty as that label's most prolific songwriter, penning most of THE TEMPTATIONS' first dozen or so hits, including GET READY (an even bigger smash for RARE EARTH), THE WAY YOU DO THE THING YOU DO, and their career maker MY GIRL, as well as classics for MARY WELLS, THE MARVELETTES, and many others. Backed by the impeccable harmonies of THE MIRACLES, he racked up dance floor exciters like MICKEY'S MONKEY and GOING TO A GO-GO, breathless ballads including OOH BABY BABY and TRACKS OF MY TEARS, and his masterstroke TEARS OF A CLOWN, a massive slab of bubblegum-soul greatness. Unlike STEVIE WONDER and MARVIN GAYE's eventual political statements, SMOKEY always stuck to what he did better than anybody...the timeless love song administered in a velvety croon; his later "quiet storm" of solo adult contemporary hits BEING WITH YOU and CRUISIN' provided a smooth footnote to an unparalleled career. It's all here on the flawless forty track double disc GOLD, the most powerful love letter to SMOKEY ROBINSON fans imaginable.

RATING: FIVE EMOTIONS

If you grew up during the Motown Years, Smokey Robinson is no surprise. A major contributor to Motown and the writing skills that fueled many other groups. This selection was his signature and it covers his rise with the Miracles and then his solo career. He was called a Soulful Poet and the moniker is apt.
His complex phrasing was self evident in songs like "My Girl has Gone" and "The Love I Saw in You was Just a Mirage". In my opinion, as a solo performer, he never matched Cruisin, which I think is a masterpiece of simplicity on so many levels.
To experience him is to understand why all the Baby Boomers love Soul.

I grew up listening to Smokey Robinson. Most of the later songs on this CD I don't think I have ever heard. Probably because they quit playing them on the pop music stations I listened to. One thing that I didn't like is the real early hits that are on the first CD. They are scratchy and don't sound too well. They should have been cleaned up and remastered before being put on this set.
