5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection of the best of Tom Jones, February 4, 2005

This collection covers the years 1965 thru 1975 so Tom's cover of Prince's "Kiss" is not here. Honestly you won't miss it. What you do get are 42 killer tracks. All of his big early hits are here, "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat", "Thunderball", "She's a Lady" and "Delilah". For me though the first ten tracks on disc one can be skipped, it's not that they are bad songs, but for me they are just too dated and sound too much alike. For me things get fun with "This And That" a UK only single from 1966. After that is his killer take on the country standard "Green Green Grass Of Home". From that point on there isn't really a weak track. You get his covers of well known hits of the era, "Sixteen Tons", "The Witch Queen Of New Orleans", "Ain't No Sunshine", "If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right" and "Pledging My Love" all done with that same bombast and over the top vocal that makes Tom Jones, TOM JONES! Oh sure, middle aged women find something else about Tom Jones that appeals to them, but for the rest of us this is just great music. This is a great collection and I think you'll find once you start playing it, you won't be able to stop, and you'll keep asking yourself why??? You may never know why so just sit back and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not unusual to enjoy the music of Tom Jones, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
Tom Jones is a legend in his own lifetime and there is a bewildering array of compilations available of varying quality. Choosing one is complicated by his career renaissance following his hugely successful Reload album in the nineties. Personally, I prefer to keep that aspect of his career separate from his earlier music. This compilation, focusing on the sixties and seventies, is one of the best compilations of Tom's earlier music. I slightly prefer the European double CD (Singles) but all the big British and American hits from the early part of Tom's career that really matter are on this one as well. American compilations do not always include major British hits that flopped in America but this one does.

Among the classic songs from his peak years (1965 to 1972) that you will find here are It's not unusual, What's new pussycat, Green green grass of home, Detroit city, Funny familiar forgotten feelings, I'll never fall in love again, I'm coming home, Delilah, Help yourself, A minute of your time, Love me tonight, Without love, Daughter of darkness, I who have nothing, She's a lady, Till and The young new Mexican puppeteer. All his other hits from this period are also here.

With a selection of failed singles, B-sides and album tracks also included, this is a brilliant compilation of Tom's music from 1965 to 1975. Other aspects of his career including his nineties comeback are covered by other compilations, but if you want the music that made him famous, this double CD should suit you although I advise you to compare this with Singles before deciding which to buy. Remember to compare prices as well as the track listings - with all the essentials on both collections, you may feel it's not worth the extra even if you prefer the higher-priced set.

4.0 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...A Near Perfect Collection, March 8, 2005
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
Welsh hunk Tom Jones was the most successful male vocalist to come out of the British Invasion. This 42-track collection chronologically covers his tenure with Parrot records beginning with his 1965 world-wide smash hit "It's Not Unusual" through his final album for the label, 1975's MEMORIES DON'T LEAVE LIKE PEOPLE.

You not only get his trademark hits like "What's New Pussycat?" and "She's a Lady," but also his lesser hits like "Promise Her Anything" (#74), "Not Responsible" (#58) and "Sixteen Tons" (#68). In addition, you also get songs that were minor hits in the U.S., but huge hits in the U.K. Among them, "Funny Familiar Forgotten Feeling" (US #49, UK #8), "I'm Coming Home" (US #57, UK #2), "Til" (US #41, UK #2--this was a 1962 hit for The Angels) and "The Young New Mexican Puppeteer" (US. #80, UK #6).

The only thing missing is "Resurrection Shuffle," which was the B-side of his 1971 hit "Puppet Man" and also charted in the lower rungs of the Top 40. With that said, this is over two hours of vintage Tom Jones. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Jones, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Gold (Audio CD)
Have always liked Tom Jones but had never bought any of his early work. The songs are great and the sound quality is really top notch. There are few true stylists like Jones left. When you hear him there is no doubt who you are listening too.

Tom Jones Gold is a two CD set that is a wonderful collection of Tom Jones hits. Tom never lets us down; he can sing with the best of them. Indeed, when you hear him sing you listen and you listen closely--his performances are always THAT good. The quality of the sound on this two CD set is excellent and the artwork is very good although it is somewhat standard for this CD series.

The first CD starts with one of Tom's biggest hits ever, "It's Not Unusual." "It's Not Unusual" is a dynamic number with lots of power; Tom never falters and that horn solo is terrific. "With These Hands" charms me with its beauty; Tom sings this perfectly and that arrangement for the piano shines brightly. "With These Hands" is one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard and Tom really enhances it all the more with his excellent diction. "What's New Pussycat?" was another huge hit for Tom; and many people still enjoy hearing Tom sing this tune. "To Make A Big Man Cry" is a poignant song and Tom delivers this with all the grace and style of a champ!

"Green Green Grass Of Home" has just a touch of country to it that embellishes this ballad; Tom's ability to deliver with all his heart and soul makes "Green Green Grass Of Home" a major highlight of this two CD set. "Sixteen Tons" is a great one with some awesome percussion that Tom aces effortlessly; and listen for "I'm Coming Home." "I'm Coming Home" gets a very sensitive treatment from Tom and the backup chorus makes it very pretty. "Delilah" is easily one of my very favorite Tom Jones tunes; I love to hear "Delilah" when Tom sings it--it's so emotional I could never forget the pain of which Tom sings. "Looking Out My Window" closes the first CD with a `60s style arrangement and Tom does this with panache.

The second CD starts with an awesome number, "Love Me Tonight." Tom makes this take off like a jet! "Without Love" is quite sensitive; and I always like it when Tom Jones sings "I (Who Have Nothing)." "I (Who Have Nothing)" has a very lush arrangement but they never drown out Tom--excellent! Of course, Tom made good yet again with his hit entitled "She's A Lady;" this ballad never sounded so good as when Tom Jones sung it. "Till" is a most romantic number. The backup chorus works very well--not that Tom needed it; but they sound pretty god anyway. "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" has a jazz/rock flavor to it that I like a lot; and Tom does this one up right!

"Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" gets a fine treatment from Tom Jones and the music fits in perfectly with his vocals. "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" is easily a major highlight of the second CD. There's also the very moving "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right;" Tom delivers this with all the style of a legendary pro and that would definitely be a good description for Tom! "I Got Your Number" is another pretty wonderful tune that has a rock flavor to make it great; and the second CD ends strong with Tom Jones performing "Memories Don't Leave Like People Do." "Memories Don't Leave Like People Do" is extremely well done and I think you'll like it very much.

Tom Jones remains a legendary entertainer; if you have any doubts about it just get this two CD set and listen! This will be more than enough to lay your concerns to rest. Naturally, this is a "must-have" for Tom's fans.

Great job, Tom! Thank you!
