The porcelain fishbowl measures just under 15 inches across the top diameter, leaving about 12 inches for the opening. The 8 immortals motif repeats on the front and back with decorative flowers adorning the sides. This vintage porcelain fishbowl is entirely hand painted and uses a gold filigree technique to add texture to the classic design. Gold filigree is a method of retracing the outlines of a scene with raised gilding. The look is similar to Japanese Imari porcelains but with a broader range of colors and subject matter. The Eight Immortals depicted on the fishbowl are rooted in Taoist traditions but are popular throughout Chinese culture and mythology. They represent virtue and power over adversity. For interior design the colors on the fishbowl pull largely from a neutral pallet of rust or fall colors with burnt tones. Tan, red, brown and gold are all well represented. Place this piece by a fireplace or in a office or study to bring a classic and scholarly look to a room. The interior has orange colored fish with green plant life painted around the edges to help make this a handsome accent even if it stands empty. A stand is not included with this piece but we recommend a 9 or 10-inch stand to accommodate this stately looking vintage porcelain planter made in the Pearl River region of China. Limited quantity available.
