This review is from: Goldberg Variations (Audio CD)
"Of the most recent releases on the harpsichord, those by a young performer named Hedi Salanki, tentative and unsteady, and by Anthony Newman, more assertive but mannered, can be set aside. The version by the notable Dutch early-music keyboardist and conductor Ton Koopman, however, counts as the best modern performance of the score this writer has encountered, and the performance of choice for a first-time 'Goldberg' purchaser."The reasons for its excellence are a pungent instrument, pungently registered and recorded; a nice balance between forward propulsion and the expansive inclusion of repeats (the performance lasts just over 62 minutes) and above all a wonderful responsiveness to the character of the individual variations, lively and dramatic where required, yet also soulful and profound." |
