5.0 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan June 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A FEAST OF SUBLIME MUSIC SERVED BY THE EXTRAORDINARY ENSEMBLE: THE KING'S SINGERS.
The disc contains Portugese, Spanish and Mexican music from the period known as the 'SIGLIO DE ORO' (The Golden Age). There are in all six composer's works herein with Alonso Lobo having three selections and Diogo Dias Melgas two. The five other composers are King John IV of Portugal, Cristobal de Morales, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Sebastian de Vivanco and Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, all of which cover a span from approximately 1500-1700.

This music is full of Iberian Catholic flavour and colour, and imbued with a religious sensuousness. Moreover, it shows composers writing at the height of their skills. These works might be associated with death and mourning, but they are exceptionally beautiful, and the performance of this ensemble singing this incredibly lush music can make your souls ascend to celestial heights.

This recording was made in 2007 as the King's Singers were about to celebrate their 40th anniversary. They exercise from beginning to the end of the program that extraordinary communal ear which takes care of intonation, blend, clarity of diction and finesse of shading. Characteristic of this music is the elimination of vibrato while managing to avoid that aggressive ironed-out tone which often goes with it.

It is commonplace for ensembles to change some personnel from year to year and this group is no exception; so though they never sing poorly, sometimes the individual voices are more attractive. This recording is one in which we have six
exceptionally good singers who are: Dsvid Hurley & Robin Tyson (countertenors), Paul Phoenix (tenor), Philip Lawson & Christopher Gabbitas (baritones) & Stephen Connolly (bass).

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Gorgeous Music March 3, 2014

I had borrowed this CD from our library and was so mesmerized by the harmonies that I had to have a copy of my own. Thank you to The King's Singers for such gorgeous music.
