Fairly thorough coverage of Dutch Art and Rijksmuseum, September 18, 2011
This review is from: The Golden Age of Dutch Art: Painting, Sculpture, Decorative Art (Hardcover)
At the time of this review, a new copy sold for about $150 (way too much) and a used one for $30 (reasonable if in Very Good condition). Paintings over the decades are covered and some ceramics, tapestries, busts, and decorative arts. The description of the paintings is quite good and details specifics for you to look at and learn from, including symbolism and hidden meaning. You will have a greater appreciation for the talent and effort these artists put into their work. Most people have heard of Rembrandt but I came away with the impression that many, many others were more talented. The color photos are adequate to see the details and in some cases there are enlargements of sections of the works. I wish there were a lot more because these painters were truly gifted artists. This book, like the Rijksmuseum, provides a large cross section of genres- still life flowers and food, ocean scenes, landscapes, portraits, everyday life, groups, cityscapes, etc. I wish I had had a copy of this book when I visited the Rijksmuseum and the Kunsthistoriches in Vienna.
