Book Description

December 2009
From famed sportswriter Ron Fimrite (1931-2010) comes the definitive history of the University of California at Berkeley’s Football Program—Golden Bears. From their humble beginnings as student diversion to their unforgettable 2008 season, the Golden Bears have remained one of the nation’s most exhilarating teams.
Relive the most stirring and memorable moments in Cal history. From “The Play” to an infamous incident in the 1929 Rose Bowl, the Bears’ best-known plays and games are chronicled in one exciting volume.
But Golden Bears is more than just a history of football at the nation’s most prestigious public university. Through fascinating profiles of CAL’s distinctive personalities, including coaches Andy Smith and Pappy Waldorf, complex players such as Jackie Jensen and Chuck Muncie, and flamboyant University presidents Benjamin Ide Wheeler and Robert Gordon Sproul, Golden Bears traces the political, cultural, and economic factors that have made Berkeley as well known for its activism as its academics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read, December 21, 2009

A great read. Ron Fimrite's book tells the story of Cal's lengthy football history but puts it in a far larger context than what happens on the field. The history of the University, the State of California and the political and social forces at work in our society all impact the successes and failures of the Golden Bears through the years. Certainly some of the most historic moments in college football including the Wrong Way Run in the Rose Bowl and "The Play" are covered in detail. But there is much more and in Fimrite's engaging style. Careful research, a good eye and an engaging sense of humor make this a must read not only for Cal alums but for football fans everywhere.

Great book a study of Bay Area history through the lens of Cal Football. I very much appreciate how the author brings you along through the glory years of Cal football to the free speech movement of the 1960's. A must read for Cal fans, old blues, and Cal Alumni! GO BEARS!
