I remember a teacher reading this in class in the 70s and we were all mesmerized. Have bought it for my children and haven't reread it yet but the illustrations are beautiful - by Jan Pienkowski of Meg and Mog fame.

This is a beautiful story, full of vivid characters and enchanting scenes. I have been teaching for many years now in a primary school and I share this story with the children to their full delight.
