4.0 out of 5 stars fun, December 20, 2007
This review is from: Golden Boy: The Complete Series (DVD)
golden boy is a short 6 episode anime series that has a good sense of teen humor, for american audiences, its close to say its the animated version of American Pie. I always have a good laugh watching this once a while, and if you are in the animation business, you should definitely check it out, the last episode pretty much connects to what real life studio job would be like. the style of anime, is various when it comes to exaggerated expressions, not always your typical sterotypes anime faces. to sum it up, this anime is just really fun for shorts and if you have imagination and a sense of humor, (and reached puberty), check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars love it, March 28, 2009

This review is from: Golden Boy: The Complete Series (DVD)
Golden Boy is about a boy who searches for the meaning of life and everything life can teach. The story line was well written and the story itself was hilarious. I bought this for only 12 dollars and i think it was the best 12 dollars i have ever spent on an anime. Kintaro is just a lovable, hilarious guy who makes you keep watching. I've already watched the series twice, but there are only six episodes. Speaking of this, the negatives about the series came in the fact that it was too short and the viewer i guess could predict the end of each episode fairly well. However, i loved the series. I watched it with my girlfriend and she's not into this kinda stuff (anime, and especially anime with sex comedy), but she actually loved it as well. I just wish there were more episodes. So if you love a good laugh, i would buy this series, especially since it's so cheap. :]

5.0 out of 5 stars Into The Wild [Beast], August 18, 2009
By
This review is from: Golden Boy: The Complete Series (DVD)
Kintaro Oe is a man that thrives on learning. He was a college student who excelled in all his classes, but left the university before he graduated. Alone, he decided to travel on a road to self-discovery, but instead of hitchhiking his way to Alaska where he'll live on a bus and dies of food poisoning, Kintaro rides his bike from town to town in a quest to work on random jobs for knowledge. Whether it's being a swimming coach, a computer technician, a babysitter, or a ramen cook, Kintaro won't be interfered from getting the experience he wants. Well, except for hot women and toilets.

Episode one has Kintaro working as a janitor in a computer industry while hitting on bodacious babes. Episode dos has Kintaro supporting a corrupt mayor candidate while hitting on his bodacious daughter. The third episode has Kintaro making ramen while protecting a not-so-bodacious ramen cook's girl from a sleazeball who's trying to take over the ramen cook business. Episode of 4 has Kentaro teaching kids how to dog paddle in a community pool while hitting on a bodaciously-tanned professional swimmer. The raunchy episode no.5 has Kentaro doing butler work in a traditional Japanese home while hitting on a bodacious babe with a "peculiar" motorcycle fetish. In the most bodacious of final episodes, and also the only one with actual ties to the past episodes, the finale has Kentaro working on a bodacious animated studio in trouble of gettin' a bodacious project to finish, so he called the bodacious gals from before to help him and a bodacious animator to get things done in a big bodacious climax.

Ecchi, or racy anime, can be a cheap and un-bodacious array of panty shots, cleavage screen hogs, and scenes of convenient tripping into a girl's locker room..."Golden Boy" is the same. However, "Golden Boy" does these aspects in a way that's unpredictable and outrageous; that's what I love about this anime. Kentaro is such a likable pervert, he handles a crisis with such level-headedness and he's such a caring guy overall that I find him admirable, even with his odd fetishes. He also happens to be an idiot-savant, though might be too savant, especially in the first episode when solved a computer problem in one day even though never touched one; that's quite a stretch.

Another thing I love about "Golden Boy" is how it diverges from the usual fanservice stuff. All of the babes here are hardly ditzy but are competent and quite abrasive towards the lead if he goes too far; the girl from the episode three was refreshing in that she's not a looker, yet episode three is still my favorite episode because not only is it endearing, but that one "kissing" scene was insanely hilarious. Episode two has an innocent girl who gets into these fanservice moments on purpose so she can ruin that boy's life. Episode four is a minor rehash of episode one, but at least Kentaro didn't succeed in the job like before. The way this anime handles racy content is still fresh, and it's from the mid-90s.

The english dialogue is very poor, but that's a good thing. Doug Smith, the dub actor who plays Kentaro, delivers his lines with such hamminess plus the way the ladies act so breathy that the anime has a vintage Skinemax appeal for itself. The dub actually has more entertainment value than the original Japanese.

Each of the six episodes stand on their own, so I can watch any episode I want and still have a good time. I could say I don't recommended "Golden Boy" for those who had the previous DVDs, but I never own them before and I bought this complete series for 15 bucks. That's a great deal for an anime that has as much laughs and heart as it has skin-tight clothing.
