5.0 out of 5 stars Golden Boy gets a golden award..., November 22, 2003
This review is from: Or (Audio CD)
This is another excellent release from Emperor Norton, and "Or" actually has one of the best synth-pop/electroclash songs ever on it! Before my review I want to mention some other Amazon.com reviewer's own comments: One guy went and said "Rippin Kittin" is by far the worst song on the album and he heard it in a gay club, so the song is "gay". Someone also wrote that "Rippin Kittin" is dark and not typical of Miss Kittin to sing this way. Those comments seem to be anything but the truth!

"Rippin Kittin" is by far the BEST song on the album, and probably the best synth-pop/electroclash song of the entire movement! Sure, the lyrics are dark, as Miss Kittin talks about killing with her parents weapons. But haven't we all heard Miss Kittin sing before? She has also sang about having dirty sex with rich and famous people in the back of a limousine, and she even laughs that Frank Sinatra is dead. She has even gone as far as singing about selling her body for sex in the stock exchange! As a matter of fact, "Stock Exchange" from Miss Kittin's first album, and "Madame Hollywood" from Felix Da Housecat's album both seem like prequel's to "Rippin Kittin". These are the three best songs by Miss Kittin, and of course, come from three different albums

As for "Or", the debut album from Golden Boy, we are presented with an extremely interesting album that has some very similar synth-lines when compared to the lead-in song, "Rippin Kittin". For example, "Kix" and "Kuckucksuhr" are both excellent songs that sound a lot like "Rippin Kittin" but without vocals. The same goes for "After 8". As a matter of fact, all the songs are great and danceable, except of course, the "Intro" track.

I would suggest buying Miss Kittin's "First Album" and Felix Da Housecat's "Kittenz And Thee Glitz" before purchasing "Or" by Golden Boy if you are new to this genre of music. All three albums have some very good songs, but "Or" will take the most getting used to for a new fan, because it is the least commercial. I would also suggest getting a hold of "Madame Hollywood" remix by Tiga. Tiga actually replaces the vocals of Miss Kittin's with his own male voice. He tends to say "...like the big dipper" repeatedly, but it is (in my opinion) a much hotter remix than the original version!

3.0 out of 5 stars he should be very thankful to Miss Kittin., October 7, 2002

I picked this up a while back because I love Miss Kittin. Unfortunately, the tracks without her vocals are rather bland and do not hold my attention. "Rippin Kittin" is amazingly good, as is "After 8," but Golden Boy's instrumentals aren't catchy or original enough to warrant repeated listens. Miss Kittin's work with the Hacker and Felix da Housecat are much more satifying.

This is an album I've been waiting to hear for a long time - before I even knew it existed...stompin, house tracks. Great techno and a real nice lively and, dare it say it, retro disco feel without sounding corny or cheesy at all.

Totally unpretencious this album parties with an aloof nonchalance that makes it simply divine. Great for parties, driving ... ;-) or just grooving in general. Get it.
