Golden Boy gets a golden award...,

This is another excellent release from Emperor Norton, and "Or" actually has one of the best synth-pop/electroclash songs ever on it! Before my review I want to mention some other Amazon.com reviewer's own comments: One guy went and said "Rippin Kittin" is by far the worst song on the album and he heard it in a gay club, so the song is "gay". Someone also wrote that "Rippin Kittin" is dark and not typical of Miss Kittin to sing this way. Those comments seem to be anything but the truth!"Rippin Kittin" is by far the BEST song on the album, and probably the best synth-pop/electroclash song of the entire movement! Sure, the lyrics are dark, as Miss Kittin talks about killing with her parents weapons. But haven't we all heard Miss Kittin sing before? She has also sang about having dirty sex with rich and famous people in the back of a limousine, and she even laughs that Frank Sinatra is dead. She has even gone as far as singing about selling her body for sex in the stock exchange! As a matter of fact, "Stock Exchange" from Miss Kittin's first album, and "Madame Hollywood" from Felix Da Housecat's album both seem like prequel's to "Rippin Kittin". These are the three best songs by Miss Kittin, and of course, come from three different albums As for "Or", the debut album from Golden Boy, we are presented with an extremely interesting album that has some very similar synth-lines when compared to the lead-in song, "Rippin Kittin". For example, "Kix" and "Kuckucksuhr" are both excellent songs that sound a lot like "Rippin Kittin" but without vocals. The same goes for "After 8". As a matter of fact, all the songs are great and danceable, except of course, the "Intro" track. I would suggest buying Miss Kittin's "First Album" and Felix Da Housecat's "Kittenz And Thee Glitz" before purchasing "Or" by Golden Boy if you are new to this genre of music. All three albums have some very good songs, but "Or" will take the most getting used to for a new fan, because it is the least commercial. I would also suggest getting a hold of "Madame Hollywood" remix by Tiga. Tiga actually replaces the vocals of Miss Kittin's with his own male voice. He tends to say "...like the big dipper" repeatedly, but it is (in my opinion) a much hotter remix than the original version!

I picked this up a while back because I love Miss Kittin. Unfortunately, the tracks without her vocals are rather bland and do not hold my attention. "Rippin Kittin" is amazingly good, as is "After 8," but Golden Boy's instrumentals aren't catchy or original enough to warrant repeated listens. Miss Kittin's work with the Hacker and Felix da Housecat are much more satifying.

This is an album I've been waiting to hear for a long time - before I even knew it existed...stompin, house tracks. Great techno and a real nice lively and, dare it say it, retro disco feel without sounding corny or cheesy at all.Totally unpretencious this album parties with an aloof nonchalance that makes it simply divine. Great for parties, driving ... ;-) or just grooving in general. Get it.

This takes off where Felix Da Housecat ended Kittenz and thee Glitz. Slightly poppier, but with excellent techno rythms, electro synths, good vocals and even funkier 80s arcade game sounds. Oh, and Rippin Kittin is a nice dark song thrown in for good measure. Definitely one of the best tech-electro albums, but with Miss Kittin on it you can hardly go wrong anyways.

Golden Boy With Miss Kittin - Or,
This review is from: Or (Audio CD)
Cheeky Swiss electro from everyone's favorite electroclash babe, Miss Kittin, and her collaborator, Golden Boy. OR is appropriately peppy, starting from the futuristic automobile "Autopilot," and even into the icier tones of "It's Good For You to Meet People" or the cute stop-start reggae off-beat of "Campari Soda." The self-referential lyrics on "1234" is clever, but the instrumental tracks seem to lack that spark that Miss Kittin brings. Just listen to the creepy serial killer lyrics of "Rippin Kittin" or the toothache-and-giggle-inducing "After 8," and you'll hear the difference. The instrumental "Kopfstand," in particular, seems to go on too long. The additional mix of "Rippin Kittin" makes what's disturbing danceable. Which is disturbing in itself.

This is the weakest of the three Miss Kittin collaborations but don't be discouraged. If you're a Miss Kittin fan you won't be disappointed. Miss Kittin and the Hacker is the best although it's tongue-in-cheek 80s revival sound can be a bit too much at times. Felix da Housecat's Kittenz and Thee Glitz is really good too, especially `Madame Hollywood', not too cheesy with it's electro beats and retro sound. The only drawback to Felix's disc is not enough tracks with Miss Kittin on vocals. Goldenboy's `Or' is not bad but I must say `Rippin Kittin' by far is the worst track on the disc. It has a cheesy Europop gay disco sound to it (I've even danced to `Rippin Kittin' at the local gay niteclub ... didn't realize it was Miss Kittin on vocals until I purchased this). I think this is in part to the fact that Miss Kittin tries her hand at singing. She isn't bad at it but I prefer Miss Kittin's flat deadpan vocals to her attempts at sounding like a typical dance diva. `After 8', `Autopilot' and `1-2-3-4' are by far the best tracks here. On the plus side Miss Kittin does vocals on six out of ten tracks so it's a must have for any Miss Kittin fan. Essentially, this is a disc of fairly good thumpy bumpy poppy house music that's doesn't tread new ground but is pure fun simply because of Miss Kittin. The tracks without her really are pointless.

If you like a very few cute, happy, but a little cyncial lyrics, and a lot of great rythms: look no further. Best CD I have bought in a year.

A great album. I don't agree that it is cheesy. Atari Teenage Riot is cheesy. Lords of acid are cheesy. This, however, is cool... very cool.
I also have to make a comment on the previous reviewer who labeled the album as "House." What is your definition of house music? German electro-synth is hardly House. Incidentally, seeing as how I frequent gay clubs on a weekly basis, I can attest that none of these tracks have been played within. Although "Silver Screen/Shower scene" was played to death.

This is a really solid electroclash album i love miss kitten's vocals. ps. "RIPPIN KITTEN" is NOT a Misfits cover the however the first time i heard the tracks opening "mommy can i go out and kill tonight..." i though it was going to be a Misfits cover... so i could see how one would think that

As per previous reviewers Rippin Kitten is the track of the CD, perhaps many dont realise that the track is a cover / re-interpretation of the classic "Mommy can I go out and kill tonight" by legendary US punk band The Misfits ( hence the "darkness" of the track) - there's a lovely remix EP released in 2001 that incorporates Glen Danzig's vocal into the track - hunt it down it's a beautiful ep. A great CD that once again demonstrates that the German electronic music scene is light years ahead of UK / US markets in terms of talent, production values and product quality control - no cheese or cliches here
