Editorial Reviews

The Golden Chicken is a riotous and raunchy exploration of one woman's wacky life of prostitution, spanning over 20 years in Hong Kong. Our heroine is KUM, unattractive but so happy-go-lucky and spunky that she is a true Hong Kong survivor, and a legend in her own right. In Hong Kong, where prostitutes are referred to as chickens she has earned herself the title of the Golden Chicken the ultimake hooker.

This is not the film to see if you are squeamish about sexual matters.

A stickup at an ATM machine leads to Kum (no kidding) reassuring the frustrated robber (who ends up being locked in the ATM booth with Kum) with stories of her prostitution adventures.

Not too surprisingly, 'all's well that ends well', but it's a heluva romp in between.

A man and a woman walk into an enclosed atm booth. she tries to make a withdrawl and the man tries to rob her. He is the most incompetent robber you have ever seen mainly because she is his first victim and he's doing it out of desperation. There's a power outage and they are trapped together so they start talking to each other. the woman has been a prostitute her whole like by choice. The great Sandra Ng, the best comedian ever to come from Hong Kong, plays the porstitute and is the most unlikely woman to ever try that profession. She's pretty, but her looks and personality do not make for a very likely lady of the evening. Her adventures are both hilarious and at times very touching. The man who is trapped with her also has his story. He was wiped out in the stock market crash and his wife went when his money went. His name is James Bond and he tells Sandra Ng his movie is coming out next week.

I know it doesn't sound like it but this is a very good natured, touching and very funny film, the kind that is rarely made here in the US anymore. If you want a T and A film look somewhere else. This was so popular in the Asia there is a sequel. This movie has never been released here but deserves to be.

It's good and funny. So is part 2. If people would not ignore movies with subtitles they would discover a whole new world. It's a historical recounting of the Sars epidemic in Hong Kong through the eyes of a prostitute. She's a comedian so it's not a sex romp, no nudity either. Like the saying goes it'll make you laugh, cry, and happy.

My Chinese is so rusty I needed the sub-titles. Don't let that deter you as little is lost in translation as Sandra Ng proves comedic talent that transcends mere language. The story is compelling, funny and sometimes sad, but worth watching. So much so I'm waiting to receive the sequel to watch.
