4.0 out of 5 stars A One-Hit Wonder Whose Only Hit Was A Modest One At That, November 29, 2011

This review is from: Golden Classics (Audio CD)
I recently submitted a review of a vinyl LP by Art & Dotty Todd, who had a solid # 6 Billboard Pop Top 100 hit in 1958 with Chanson d'Amour (Song Of Love), pointing out that the underlying reason why there is no current CD compilation of their music likely stems from the fact they were bona-fide One-Hit Wonders. But I also pointed out that there are numerous CDs now available covering others In that same category.

One such is Cannibal & The Headhunters, an East Los Angeles Mexican-American group who were together for less than two years and who were discovered by, and recorded for, Rampart Records owner Eddie Davis, kicking off what became known as "The East Side Sound."

Originally calling themselves Bobby & The Classics when they first got together in 1964 - the launching year of the British Invasion - Frankie "Cannibal" Garcia, Robert "Rabbit" Jaramillo, Richard "Scar" Lopez and Joe "Yo Yo" Jaramillo reached back to 1963 and the hit by Chris Kenner, Land Of 1,000 Dances, and saw it go to # 30 Hot 100 in March/April 1965 on Rampart 642 b/w I'll Show You How To Love Me. And that would be it.

So, if Collectables believes that a # 30 hit by a One-Hit Wonder warrants a 16-track CD compilation (with great sound, by the way, and informative notes by Mark Marymont), then there's hope for the appearance of a similar volume for the owners of a # 6 smash (plus another that charted in the U.K.).

This is one 1960s band for which there will be no reunions as Garcia passed away on January 21, 1996 at age 49, Jaramillo left us on May 24, 2000 at age 54, and Lopez died of lung cancer on July 30, 2010 at age 65.
