Wonderful,

This review is from: The Golden Cross (The Heirs of Cahira O'Connor #2) (Paperback)
I couldn't wait to read this book. After reading the Silver Sword to not have read the Golden Cross would have broken my heart. The story was so fast I wish I was still reading it. Hunt is truly an artist in her own way. Aidan is a figure that all people can draw strengh from. Read this book and I know you will come away feeling like you've read a masterpiece.

Most enthralling historical novel that I've ever read!,
This review is from: The Golden Cross (The Heirs of Cahira O'Connor #2) (Paperback)
This novel and this series bring to life a world of characters that I regret having to say good-bye to at the end. Angela Elwell Hunt is a strong writer and a wonderful tool for Christ. I would (and might) go broke if she keeps writing such beautiful works.

Excellent Historical Fiction Set in the 1600s,
By Mom Who Reads A Lot (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Golden Cross (The Heirs of Cahira O'Connor #2) (Paperback)
This is the second book in a four book series titled "The Heirs of Cahira O'Connor" (the first one, also excellent, is titled the Silver Sword). In this book Aiden O'Connor learns to survive and maintain her virtue when her father dies at sea, leaving her and her mother homeless and without money. Aiden, who has a God-given talent of drawing & painting, is given a chance to use her gift disguised as a boy on a ship. The story is an excellent example of how good overcomes evil and how one can rise (with God's help) above unfortunate circumstances. The author does a thorough job of researching the culture of the Dutch in the time period, provides accurate details of water coloring & painting, and how life was typically lived on a ship in the 1600s. It was a terrific book, as was the first one. I highly recommend them!

Awesome Book,

This book surprised me! (in a VERY good way) I read the first book in this series, "The Silver Sword", and didn't think much of it so I wasn't really looking forward to reading this one so I was amazed when I couldn't pull myself out of this one. Some of the other reviewers said that the book captures your attention and you won't be able to put it down. This is sooo true! I found myself taking it everywhere with me so that I could read it, including the grocery store. I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next with Aidan! So definitely read this book one and all and also check out my other reviews! :)

A Masterpiece,
By
This review is from: The Golden Cross (The Heirs of Cahira O'Connor #2) (Paperback)
This book is engrossing, to say the least. Be prepared to lose hours of your time in order to finish this book. The book moves quickly, with secrets and dastardly plots. Aidan O'Connor seeks to escape her life in the slums by using her art. Her patron sees her talent and seeks to have it brought to the light of day. The characters are rich and well rounded. The conversions and realizations of self are truly well written and believable. Personally, I like how the beginning and end of every book begins with Kathleen setting up the story, and then giving a postscript. This is a wonderful book that can bring to life an entirely new world.

A Wonderful Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Golden Cross (The Heirs of Cahira O'Connor #2) (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked it better than the first in the series, although that was good too. Stories about the sea always interest me and the book held my interest all the way through. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to paint as well. The character's faith in God was brought out through the whole book. I am looking forward to the third in the series.

This is a worthy sequel to The Silver Sword. Ms. Hunt's heroines are believable and inspiring. You can't put these books down. The historical aspects are fascinating. Buy the series - you won't regret it!

Love anything Angela Elwell Hunt writes!,

This series is absolutely one of my favorites. Love anything she writes, but nothing as much as this series. She also wrote another medieval/renaissance series called The Theyn Chronicles which I highly recommend if you liked the Heirs of Cahira O'Connor series. Afton of Margate Castle (The Theyn Chronicles, Book 1) The Troubadour's Quest (Theyn Chronicles Book 2) Ingram of the Irish (The Theyn Chronicles, Book 3)

Need a little spring break? Want to go somewhere but can't? My suggestion is to pick up a good book or two and lose yourself in an adventure. The Golden Cross, by Angela Hunt, took me to 1642 in Dutch Batavia on the island of Java. It focused on the rough life in and around a wharf side tavern; the girls, the rowdy sailors looking for more than drink, and the opposing gentility who would not dare to set foot in that part of town.
Aidan O'Connor, after her father's death at sea, is left to be raised by her mother as a barmaid in a tavern near the docks. She has learned the skills of conversation, pick-pocketing, and how to deflect unwanted advances by drunken sailors. She also has a God-given talent for drawing and capturing the essence of her subjects. She meets a world-famous cartographer and artist who becomes her mentor. He wants to take her on a voyage searching for a new world to add artistic embellishments of flora and fauna to the maps he will will be making. I did not care for the epilogue portions of the book. While they tried to give some background, I felt they were unnecessary. Intrigue, disguises, romance, and adventure surround Aidan in The Golden Cross. If you want a fun, fast-paced book, I think you will enjoy this. |
