About the Author

Mercer Mayer – writer and illustrator for Little Critter First Readers, as well as Little Critter Spectrum began writing and illustrating children’s books in 1966 and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator’s books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.

“Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid,” says Mercer. “Now that I’m a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like.”

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children’s book, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child.

I believe these books are meant for older kids, but my 3-year-old son is starting to read and he LOVES these Critter Kids books! They are cartoons with a box of text at the bottom that narrates the story. But on each page there are also a lot of "bubbles" where the characters each have something to say. Finally, there are boxes of interesting facts on each page that teach a topic relevant to the story. We can read just the narrating text, or the whole thing bubbles and all, depending on how much time we want to spend with the book that particular day. Usually, I read the narrative and my son reads some of the bubble text. He is learning a lot too!

I gave this particular book 3 stars because of all the Critter Kids books of this type, this is my son's least favorite. The Critter Kids go to a Native American reservation and find themselves in the midst of a mystery: why are the golden eagle eggs disappearing? Along the way, LC meets a mysterious Indian (who confusedly is also named Golden Eagle), who uses his medicine to guide LC and his friends to the answer. The story is a bit too abstract for my young son. There is a lot of hinting and innuendo, and the real golden eagles and the man Golden Eagle are confusing to him. There is not much social interaction among the characters. Also, the fact box topic of desert animals is just not as interesting to him. His favorites are 1)Alien Adventure, 2)Swamp Thing and 3)Octopus Island.
