If you are looking for the definative Golden Earring album this probably isn't it. However, if you are familiar with their hits and have one or two other CD's by them, then this is a must for your collection. You'll also find the original version of Big Tree, Blue Sea on this LP. It later appeared on Moontan (with Radar Love) but the mix was entirely different.
This LP (also known as Wall of Dolls)shows the band truly maturing from their mid 60's pop rock sound. It's also one of the earliest LP's featuring Caesar Zuijderwick, perhaps the world's greatest rock drummer. Get their videos and see what I mean.

every song on this is solid and engaging,"big tree, blue sea" is the best tune here, clocking in at 6-minutes,this song does more with the jethro tull sound than even they could muster themselves.it rocks hard and the flute playing is great, adds an eirry atmosphere to it.great guitar work by george kooymans also.and speaking of kooymans:he sings great vocals on 3 of the songs:best on being "this is the time of the year",it makes me wonder how many countless bands have followed that guitar-riff,for eons...i'd like say GE invented that, being this was from 1970!!!.another highlight is "peguins to the sky",with a rock-solid guitar solo-jam,don't care for the chorus, but that's only a minor complaint!.another criminally neglected classic from the earring that's worth a listen!!!

I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST OR MAYBE THE BEST ALBUM OF THIS GROUP. HIS STYLE AND SOUND IS SO DIFFERENT FROM HIS OTHERS. I REALLY RECOMEND IT. THEY HAVE IN HERE A PROGRESIVE SOUND AND EACH OF THEM PLAYS LIKE IF THAT WILL BE THE LAST RECORDING OF THEIR LIVES...REALLY SPECTACULAR AND DEEP IN SOUND. YOU HAVE TO WATCH FOR UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN. NO WORDS FOR A GOOD DESCRIPTION, YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT. WONDERFUL!!!

At first I didn't really like the album that much but it grew on me quickly. Yellow and Blue - a great morning song with

flute and a funny emphasis on the word calendar but its got a great point of course. The Loner is a good rock story. I don't like See, See- too much word play or as Long as the Wind Blows but Big Tree, Blue Sea is great and interesting to hear the original version but what makes the whole thing well worthwhile is Send my Pigeons to the Sky. Don't misjudge this song by the title-it seriously rocks. The Wall of Dolls is great also- I can see where the Uriah Heep comparisons come from. This is the time of the Year is a great rocker in the early Golden Earring

style.

I discovered this album after Moontan as I was lucky to have had a record store in the area that stocked a good deal of imports. I loved this album from the begining. Back home rocks, Yellow and blue is catchy and This is the Time of the Year is a great track. an exceptional treat is the original recording of Big Tree Blue Sea. A solid work from a truly great rock band. In my opinion much much better than The Stones

Something about the album cover makes me think the band is standing in a shoe store until I give it a second look and realize those are dolls hanging back there, hehe.

While I believe Golden Earring would immediately become significantly better after this albums release (in fact, from Seven Tears through To the Hilt is just *fantastic*) I can't deny that I enjoyed this self-titled album tremendously and refuse to give it anything less than 5 stars.

"I'm Going to Send My Pigeons to the Sky" is my favorite song for the splendid vocal melody and, even though the guitar work during the middle section feels really clunky and Grand Funk Railroad-ish with a series of disjointed and amateurish riffs and solos, I love it anyway. For a fairly beautiful ballad, check out "As Long As the Wind Blows". The vocal melody almost feels like the band is mocking the 60's flower power generation of rock music, but I have a feelng the band is going for a sincere performance here. Either way, it's a pretty decent song.

"Back Home" will almost immediately remind anyone of the legendary Jethro Tull thanks to some remarkably similar flute soloing in the beginning leading directly into a momentary period of crunchy guitar riffs. The chorus darn near reminds me of something Humble Pie would have created back in the day. This song is another fine example of diversity because it sounds like a party rock anthem of some sorts, which is yet another example of Golden Earring's trademark creativity as far as I'm concerned. "The Wall of Dolls" is fairly basic in both the vocal melody and guitar riff, but it's alright (if slightly undeveloped).

"Yellow and Blue" contains a very Traffic-like flute solo (or early Genesis if you wish) though... scratch that. How about Blind Faith?
