Editorial Reviews

From Oakland, CA comes Del the Funky Homosapien; a true innovator & legend in the world of Hip-Hop. In the early part of the first decade of 2000, Del linked up with super-producer Dan The Automator and world-class turntablist Kid Koala to create one of the most innovative Hip-Hop albums in modern history, DELTRON 3030. Deltron received amazing reviews (4.5 stars from Rolling Stone) and continued on to further secure Del's place in Hip-Hop history. The ideas and concepts born with Deltron 3030 allowed for the creation of Del's next project; the 'Gorillaz' collaboration. With Dan The Automator at the helm, Damon Albarn (Blur), Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club's Tina Weymouth, Buena Vista Social Club star Ibrahim Ferrer and Kid Koala working together, the album was an immediate hit. Del's vocals on the smash single 'Clint Eastwood' helped the Gorillaz sell over 5 million records. Del has continued to release quality, critically acclaimed material for over 10 years and with the release of 'Golden Era', a 3 CD set that includes a brand new album & 2 albums never-before-released physically, there's no end in sight!

5.0 out of 5 stars Del has been busy... April 20, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
...although you might not have known it. His last "official" solo release was "The 11th Hour" in 2008. This album received some brutal reviews, and for good reason. It was simplistic and sloppy at times. Fans were astonishingly asking, "it took you seven years to record this album?" I liked the album overall, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't somewhat disappointed with it. Luckily, my disappointment was short lived because almost immediately after "The Eleventh Hour" Del went into a work frenzy, making four albums in three years.

The first was "Funk Man" in 2009, a free album released via bandcamp.

The next was "Automatik Statik," also released in 2009 to celebrate the launch of Del's new website.

Then last year in 2010, Del released "It Ain't Illegal Yet," Del's third and most recent self-released album. Unlike the previous two albums this had a physical cd release.

And now we have "Golden Era," a triple cd release that contains the newest album as well as "Funk Man" and "Automatik Statik." All three albums are great in their own ways.

I could go into detail about each album, but I don't want to turn this review into a novel. What I can summarize is that each album has at least a few songs that will completely blow your mind, assuming you are somewhat of a Del fan to start. The rest of the songs are stellar in their own ways, and run the gamut on why Del is so great. Whether it be video games, wack emcess, clever word play or just having fun, you will find something to love in these albums.

Del has spent the past few years working his ass off to make music for his fans. Hopefully they appreciate it.

5.0 out of 5 stars His best since "No Need For Alarm" May 10, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Del has come a long way since writing lyrics for his cousin Ice Cube as a teenager. I became an immediate fan with his first release back in 1991, "I Wish My Brother George Was Here" (this record probably got more play than any other album I listened to in high school, pretty sure I wore the cassette out). He falls within my top 5 influences to emcee and produce Hip Hop to this day, and for that I thank him. Have seen him live roughly a dozen times over the years and would say I definitely fall within the category of lifelong fan, though truth be told I've slept on Del since his 2008 release, "11th Hour." It was one of those albums I _wanted_ to like, but never really felt no matter how many times I gave it another try. It wasn't that it was a bad album, exactly, but waiting several years for a new release and that was the result? Eh, it was a disappointment.

That written...

This past weekend my girlfriend and I were record shopping when I caught the "Golden Era" album cover out the corner of my eye (the Hieroglyphics logo on Del's hat stuck out). Picked it up. Dang, three albums for the price of one ("Golden Era" plus two albums he released after "11th Hour" as strictly downloads: "Automatik Statik" and "Funk Man"). All Del and nothing I heard before. I felt nostalgic and the title "Golden Era" evoked great memories. So knowing nothing about this new album I bought it.

And wow.

Can't write Del off as a has-been just yet. "Golden Era" is a mutant, a jewel amongst the hot garbage that makes for most of what you'll find in the rap music section of your favorite record store today (or if you no longer actually shop for physical albums, the (c)rap music you might download legally or not-so-legally). There's definitely the theme of maintaining a Golden Era of Hip Hop in which we should forget the previous held conception that the "Golden Era" is what we listened to between 1986-1997 (the year span roughly, depending on who you ask), but could and will last far past 3030 so long as we keep things fresh.

If you were already a fan of Del, you'll love this album. If you were not a fan of Del, "Golden Era" might just convert you.

Great album! Very catchy lines and has great flow. Beats are tight and funky with low bass lines. 'Break the bank' and 'Calculate' are my favorites.
