Editorial Reviews

Review

"For vegetable gardening in the Bay Area, Golden Gate Gardening is indispensable — if you buy one gardening book, this is the one."
Michael Pollan, author of In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma

"Every Bay Area gardener knows that, in addition to a copy of the Western Garden Book, you MUST have Golden Gate Gardening in your library."
Sunset

"...an excellent gardening book, of particular value for those living where the ocean fogs influence the gardening climate, but with substantial new material for those living just beyond the fog's reach."
Pacific Horticulture

"For 17 years, Bay Area gardeners have relied on Pam Peirce's authoritative 'Golden Gate Gardening' as their go-to resource for no-nonsense general instruction on nurturing fruits, vegetables and herbs in the home garden."
San Jose Mercury News

"...exceptionally thorough, authoritative and readable. It is a rare combination of solid science, practical experience and a conversational style of writing... The good chapters keep coming. Look for clear practical information on garden planning, improving garden soil, buying seeds and other starts, getting plants started and watering. The book also has very good sections on pests, diseases and annual and perennial weeds."
The Monterey Herald

"We'll admit it--we're envious of gardeners who live in regions covered by this magnificent book . . . a Laurel's Kitchen for California mid-coastal gardeners."
HortIdeas

"Peirce writes in a clear, easily understandable style. Charts show plants that thrive in fog and those that grow in sun. Month-by-month graphs identify plant and harvest schedules for year-round bounty. Included is advice on soil, composting, pest and weed control, detailed instructions for many favorite fruits, vegetables and herbs, and a few well-tested recipes for enjoying the harvest."
Marin Independent Journal

"My very favorite Bay Area gardening book is Golden Gate Gardening, a work of genius written by Pam Peirce.  I love the book so much that when I speak to serious SF Bay Area gardeners and find that they don’t own it I’m shocked.  I reference it anytime I plant something new and frequently before harvesting a new crop."

This book tells me almost everything I need to know to start my first vegetable garden, from planning my garden to dealing with pests. I can't imagine a better all-around book for gardeners who live in the Bay Area or California coast. The information is all specific to local micro-climates, with no space wasted on information that is not relevant in this part of the country. My only criticism is that I would have left out the handful of recipes scattered in the book.

Michael Pollen was right. If you buy one book for gardening in the bay area, buy this on. It is all you need. It shows when to plant what vegetables with a very easy to follow visual chart. It explains in detail the hows and whys of vegetable gardening. We are starting a small farm, and I would be lost without this book. I am constantly referring back to it for information. I cannot disagree more with the fellow who gave it one star and said it was a disorganized mess. Many of us in the gardening community swear by this very well organized, detailed and informative book. It is my vegetable gardening bible!

I've been waiting for this book since Dec 2009 from the great reviews of the earlier edition. A great book for the beginner and experienced. This is mainly for veggies, but does go over some native plants, pests, sun and climate, and recipies. This guide is a great read and highly recommended.

I picked up this book as a beginning gardener in San Francisco, and it helped me set up my garden and successfully bring a huge crop to fruition my first summer.

I had a few other gardening books that I picked up at the same time, and realized by the end of the season this was the only book I was referring to. The Bay Area has such a unique climate and growing conditions, I found myself not being able to trust the information I was getting out of the other books. I needed information about fog, not frost! The other Bay Area-centric books just didn't have the information laid out in a way that was very organized, and I found myself not using them very much.

I feel the book is organized into chapters that make sense, and the descriptions about each vegetable and herb are very helpful. There is a lot of information, but it isn't overwhelming, even for a very curious beginning gardener. Ten years later, I'm still discovering new parts of the book as my knowledge increases.

The parts of the book I use the most and have bookmarked for easy reference? The planting calendar, which has all the veggies laid out in an easy to read chart to show when you can (and when you could try) to plant each crop. I use this every year without fail. Also, because I'm a container gardener in a good portion of my yard, the "how deep does it need to be" section is super helpful when I'm trying to figure out what I can plant in each container.

Great book, highly recommended!

The gardening information is fantastic; I am getting a home gardening up and running based on the authors advice. I only wish I had purchased the paper copy instead of the ebook. The ebook really fell short of my expectations. For example, the index does not have clickable links and no page numbers are listed! There were several other issues with charts and side bar items that made me wish I had purchased a physical copy.

I've grown vegetables for years, but California coastal gardening is different from the rest of the country - so seed packet information rarely fits. This book is an incredibly good reference for our area. There are accurate charts of what to grow when, and recommendations on the best varieties for coastal crops, along with a wealth of sensible advice. Highly recommended if you live and garden in the coastal zone.

This book gives you so many insider tips for different parts of the Bay Area, and down to specific neighborhoods, for example, I live on the sunny side of the hill so don't see any fog, but if a friend lives in Sunset, then the information here would be quite different. This book covers it.

Highly recommended for San Francisco & the Bay Area gardeners.
