The Golden Leg: And Other Ghostly Campfire Tales + Haunted Shores: True Ghost Stories of Newfoundland and Labrador

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

One of Canada's favourite storytellers is back with a collection of classic ghost stories for young readers. If you dare, make your acquaintance with dark-cloaked ladies gliding through the silent streets, headless men fished out of the ocean's depths, and clutching hands reaching out of the inky darkness. Author and storyteller Dale Jarvis has put together a collection of spooky stories from Newfoundland and Labrador, along with ghastly tales hand-picked from haunted spots around the world, and he has retold them in his own wonderfully creepy style. All author's royalties from The Golden Leg will be donated to the Camp Delight Children's Oncology Camp, a project of the Candlelighters Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. This annual summer camp program, designed for children between the ages of 7 and 17 diagnosed with cancer, their siblings, and siblings of children who have passed away, has hosted hundreds of campers since 1988.

About the Author

Dale Gilbert Jarvis is a researcher, writer, and storyteller living and working in St. John's, Newfoundland. He holds a B.Sc. (Honours) in Anthropology from Trent University and an MA in Folklore from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He currently is the Provincial Registrar for the Historic Places Initiative with the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, and sits on the board of the Newfoundland Historic Trust. Dale's fortnightly exploration of all things paranormal in the province, "Newfoundland Unexplained," is a regular column in The Telegram. As a storyteller, Dale has performed at festivals and concerts across Canada. Locally, he is best known as the host and guide of the St. John's Haunted Hike, a walking ghost tour through the haunted streets of old St. John's. Under his supervision, locals and tourists have been introduced to the vengeful lovers, murdered soldiers, and mysterious fires which await those brave enough to explore the secrets that lie in wait in St. John's darkest corners. Mixing history, humour, and traditional storytelling, Dale has been winning over audiences and throwing in the odd scare here and there, and has been covered by a wide variety of local, national, and international media. Dale regularly teaches workshops for beginning storytellers, and has taught workshops across Canada on storytelling for historic sites, museum, and park interpreters. He has also taught the basics of storytelling to grades three to six. Dale is the founder of the St. John's Storytelling Circle and one of the coordinators of the annual St. John's Folk Arts Council Storytelling Festival. As of 2007, Dale is the Eastern Canada Coordinator for the national guild of storytellers, Storytellers of Canada/Conteurs du Canada. Dale is the author of two books on Newfoundland and Labrador folklore published by Flanker Press. He is committed to spreading the art and profession of storytelling and encouraging new storytellers to tell their tales.
