2.0 out of 5 stars Judy parodies herself, January 10, 2007

This review is from: Golden Legends: Judy Collins (Audio CD)
Be aware that these tracks are not the popular versions you've heard before. These are heavily orchestrated muzak-style versions on which Judy sings way over-the-top. The music reminds me very much of something you would see on a modern PBS special featuring washed-up musicians in some sort of lavish production. Although her voice is still quite pretty on this album I'm just not fond of the arrangements. They're not at all the folksy renditions for which Judy Collins is known. If one were to have insomnia then this may make a good lullaby album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice., December 30, 2007
By
This review is from: Golden Legends: Judy Collins (Audio CD)
This cd is full of wonderful songs. The arrangements are simply beautiful, with just the right amount of orchestration. Judy is faithful in keeping to the true melodies, and never "makes love" to them through extensive embellishing.
On this cd is the best arrangement of "Barbara Allen" that I've ever heard. Many versions that I've heard of the song seem to make the song a joke. But thankfully that is not true with Judy's rendition. The song is a very sad one, and through the wonderful orchestration and Judy's beautiful and sensitive tone, that is clearly communicated.
Other especially good arrangements on this cd are "The Times They Are a Changin'", and "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair". Sample the cd. If you like what you here with one track, you'll like them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD, SOLID INTRO TO JUDY COLLINS, March 1, 2009

This review is from: Golden Legends: Judy Collins (Audio CD)
This is a very good introduction CD to those who may have somehow
missed Judy Collins in a large music scene. The songs are excellent,
most well-known to Collins fans & they show her range & wonderful
voice. I gave this to my 13 year old daughter on her birthday & she
loves it & wants to seek out more albums by Collins. A new fan is born!
