About the Author

Keith lectures frequently around the US on music industry careers and consults with a number of music industry companies. He facilitates online classes at Berkleemusic.com in music industry public relations and career development, and contributes frequent essays on the music industry to various print and online publications. Reading this book made me feel like I had my own private interview room with accomplished engineers and producers constantly shuffling in and out. Some of the industry's top engineers share tips and advice about inexpensive gear (microphones especially), recording techniques, and mixing. Highlights include an extensive description and explanation of mic preamps by Millenia Media's John LaGrue, and an entire chapter dedicated to unconventional and interesting recording techniques (such as reshaping studio sounds with stomp boxes and complex filters). The specific gear recommendations were also very helpful for a novice like myself.

Recommended for those just starting out with recording as well as the more seasoned recordist who's looking to broaden his/her craft.

I was rather disappointed by this book. There are a lot of interviews that ask basically the same questions; "What microphones do you use", "what gear do you use". The interviews are short, about one page, so the different producers doesn't really have any room to elaborate, and as a consequence not very many "recording secrets" are reviled.

The book is nice casual reading, but don't expect to really get some useful information out of it.
